Depends what ports you have on your computer and what connections are on your camera.

Yeah, your camera needs a firewire slot or sometimes called i-link and a firewire port on your computer.

Otherwise there's other gadgets you can buy that plug into usb or usb-2 ports which plug into RCA ports (those yellow and white or yellow white and red sockets) and your usb port etc. You need to look at your camera's manual. If it mentions being plugged into a computer then follow those instructions otherwise you need to see the connections for plugging into a tv and then find the relavant cables for plugging them into your camera.

I have a camera that just has yellow and white sockets on and I have firewire and video (yellow socket) input on my computer. So I have bought a cable for plugging my camera in that way although it has no sound. For sound I need to buy a cable which at one end has the audio rca sockets and the other the standard computer stereo plug (like on your pc speakers). Its really bloody awkward unless you have one of these DV cameras. If you have a DV camera then you're going to find it easy, plug n play as they say.

Why not just use Firewire Robert? That way you would get uncompressed video and sound together, rather than doing it through analogue which is degrading it by a generation. I'm a video editor by the way, so any queries let me know and I'll try and answer or ask one of my colleagues ;)

Hopefully you'll have got some software with it. That being the case, it should be easy to follow the instructions.
