what is ping?

what exactly is "ping"? What is better..a ping of say 200 or a ping of 300? I dont understand ping at all!!

if you go on web forums bout net speed etc..everyone talks bout ping and how fast is yours etc...havent a clue what ping is though!!

the lower the ping the better. its the time it takes for your computer to respond. its kinda like tennis if you will, its like how long it takes from serving untill the ball is hit by the other player. i dunno if that will heklp or not....:(

Ping is the time it takes in milisecounds I belive for a packet to be sent from youre PC to the server and back.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

PING

A protocol that sends a message to another computer and waits for acknowledgment, often used to check if another computer on a network is reachable.
Like sonar, in the films they "ping" a submarine.
Send out a pulse, waiti till it returns & the time it takes gives the distance away etc.
Very similar except for computing it's regarding the speed at which packets of data can travel between your PC & the final destination/server.
But on the other hand..
It is also:
A sharp, high-pitched sound, as that made by a bullet striking metal

Ping mean sending some message or contact in general

IN internet terms, When you send or recieve some data packets to other PCs on Local Area Network or WWW, you are PINGing.

Thats what I know and i am abit sure it is as i said ;)

You can ping to your own PC by

Goto Start, Run , type CMD press ok or Enter

In Dos Window(black) Type PING 127.0.0.1 and press enter ;)

I don't know too much, but ping is also a method of storing pictures, if I want to save a file with transparent content, like words i want to float on something later, or a photo of some one with no background so I can layer it on something else later I use ping not jpeg as jpeg doesnt support transparent content
