Hello,

I wonder if anyone can help me.

I've been researching my family history and I have found a great great great(etc) grandmother who was called Ellen Mary Hitchens (she married a William Fothergill Robinson, broker and proprietor of Liverpool.)

I've been told that Ellen Mary was known as "The Rose of Burnley" and her sister (name unknown) was known as "The Lily of Burnley"

I was just wondering if anyone could shed any light on what the reference, 'rose' or 'lily of Burnley' may be, if the phrase is used commonly or specifically or is known locally or if the Hitchens family are well known in local history.

Ellen Mary Hitchens was born in about 1801 in Burnley, married in 1831 to William Fothergill Robinson in Burnley and painted by George Richmond in 1870, when she was in mourning dress in the year her husband died. (The painting is at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge)

I don't know when Ellen died but it would have been after 1870.

Any help or information would be most appreciated and please feel free to forward my email to someone who might know about the Rose and Lily sisters of Burnley.

Hiya Rose,When I was young walking out was called walking day,it was when all or most of the local churches had their annual parade,they would choose one of the children as the Queen and they would parade around their local parish,the parade would consist of the parents and families of the kids who went to Sunday school and the Queen was usually the child who in the opinion of the Sunday school teachers had done the best or worked hardest during the year,this was probably the case as to the Rose of Burnley you are trying to find out about,by the way did you get in contact with Mr.Frost?
