Question Help, how do you get a new birth certificate?

Someone I know wants to get a passport, they've never had one before and can't find their birth certificate, does anyone know the best and cheapest way to get a new one? While I'm at it,when do the new type of passports come in? :)

£42!
To renew them, and £25 for the kids?

WTF are they doing to warrant that cost?
Jeesus, for my family that would put £159 onto the cost of a holiday straight away...

Pathetic..

Thanks Jason, for the web site for the passport office. Although I have dual citizenship (English & Canadian) I have always renewed my British passport and never bothered with a Canadian one which is more expensive and has to be renewed every 5 years.Mine is due for renewal in November. I send the forms and old passports to the British Embassy over here and the new ones are usually back in about 10 days.
