Default Bit of Spookyness

Last weekend Busman and I and the two girls paid a visit to the 'Hellfire Caves' in West Wycombe. We went on a guided tour and had all the usual spiel about the various ghosties and ghoulies we might encounter - a warning to young ladies not to be afraid if one particular spook grabbed them by the elbow and dragged them out of the place!

Now I'm not one to be taken in by all the chat geared up to attract the tourists, and the idea of a ghost which can physically pull someone along yards of tunnel did not impress me at all. However, we did take a few photos as we were going through just in case we snapped a sudden apparition.

Then at one point I turned round to look back and saw a mist descend from the roof of the tunnel above an archway and rapidly shoot off up the tunnel. Now that was weird.

I also saw something vaguely illuminated by the lights from a side alcove/tunnel but couldn't quite capture it on photograph. There definitely seemed to be a face there but not an unpleasant one.

Busman got a couple of orbs in a couple of his photos. I used to be very dismissive of orbs but have actually seen then not on film or digital photo but in real life so I know they are something. I don't think they are something ghostly though. They may very well be something 'other worldly' in the sense of something we just can't comprehend.

I know one or two of you have been interested in similar things in the past so I thought I would share these with you.

It's a bit of a creepy place. Not sure at all what the Hellfire club was but there were a lot of celebrity status type people in it (Lords and Ladies and statesmen types) and it was all secret meetings and symbolism. Sir Francis Dashwood whose grounds those caves are in and who created the whole thing was referred to as 'Saint Francis' and he had '12 apostles'. Part of the 'cave' system is referred to as the inner temple and there's a it where they had to cross water to get any further and the water was called the River Styx.

It's all man-made tunnels, not natural caves, but was first created by miners excavating the chalk and then elaborated on later by these Hellfire bods.

It is rather spooky down there and pretty chilly even on a hot summer day, but not like going down a real pothole type cave system.

It sounds and looks like it is really atmosepheric and just the place for strange things to happen. Being, underground , old and dark.
The history of the tunnels must have left an inprint? Maybe its on ley lines?
I havent been there but a friend of mine used to live nearby so will ask her what her impression of the place is and show her your photo,s.

Thanks Kiki. I'd like to go again sometime when it's a bit quieter. There were too many other people around really to get any feel of the atmosphere but it certainly is an interesting place and has some weird associations. I'd love to know more about what went on there.

It looks well spooky on the photos. I love things like this, the unexplainable stuff.

I've never had any spooky feelings around Clitheroe castle which is odd considering it must have quite a record of unpleasant happenings.

There was a program on TV the other night about Chillingham which is somewhere I once went with my later husband and I wasn't bothered by any part of it until it came to the dungeons and I just couldn't go down there. There was a most awful feeling and I could not go down those steps.

The program was very good because they dismissed a lot of things which could have been interpreted as something else so they weren't just jumping to wild conclusions like 'Most Haunted' tend to do.

Did you see my other photo of the ghostly thing on a bed at a B&B where we stayed by accident?
