| It's a bit of a creepy place. Not sure at all what the Hellfire club was but there were a lot of celebrity status type people in it (Lords and Ladies and statesmen types) and it was all secret meetings and symbolism. Sir Francis Dashwood whose grounds those caves are in and who created the whole thing was referred to as 'Saint Francis' and he had '12 apostles'. Part of the 'cave' system is referred to as the inner temple and there's a it where they had to cross water to get any further and the water was called the River Styx. It's all man-made tunnels, not natural caves, but was first created by miners excavating the chalk and then elaborated on later by these Hellfire bods. It is rather spooky down there and pretty chilly even on a hot summer day, but not like going down a real pothole type cave system.

| It sounds and looks like it is really atmosepheric and just the place for strange things to happen. Being, underground , old and dark. The history of the tunnels must have left an inprint? Maybe its on ley lines? I havent been there but a friend of mine used to live nearby so will ask her what her impression of the place is and show her your photo,s. |

| Thanks Kiki. I'd like to go again sometime when it's a bit quieter. There were too many other people around really to get any feel of the atmosphere but it certainly is an interesting place and has some weird associations. I'd love to know more about what went on there.

| I've never had any spooky feelings around Clitheroe castle which is odd considering it must have quite a record of unpleasant happenings. There was a program on TV the other night about Chillingham which is somewhere I once went with my later husband and I wasn't bothered by any part of it until it came to the dungeons and I just couldn't go down there. There was a most awful feeling and I could not go down those steps. The program was very good because they dismissed a lot of things which could have been interpreted as something else so they weren't just jumping to wild conclusions like 'Most Haunted' tend to do.
