Default No self-catering in the cinema please !

Heard a discussion on Jeremy Vine yesterday, whereby a postman had gone to the cinema loaded with his own snacks ... not bought at the cinema.

His bag was searched and told that he could not take them in.. asked for his money back.

His opposite guest was a rather strident lady who stated that cinemas were a business and you wouldn't go in a restaurant with yer own steak and ask them to cook it (not a good example methinks). Always thought cinemas were there to put bums on seats and not an add-on sweet store.

Although, I never feel the need to munch and drink whilst watching a film .. can be annoying with the crinkley wrappers, etc.

In some cases, the confectioneries cost more than the tickets.

Think they may be pushing their luck here with some punters.

I haven't been to the cinema for AGES even though I love cinema. This is partly due to all the distractions created by noisy punters with their phones going off, talking through the film, kicking the back of your seat and noisy eaters!
I don't know what the big thing with stocking up on buckets full of food and pop to watch a film is all about. Do people think they're gonna starve in there or what?
I have however taken the odd drink or packet of sweets in there (without advertising the fact), which I've consumed quietly lol. The food in cinemas - like most entertainment venues is a rip-off so I can sympathise with the bloke in the news, but if others are willing to pay over the odds they're not going to reduce their prices.

This happened in Hull where i live a mum and her kids were told they couldnt bring their own snack into the pictures, she went to the paper and they printed the story the cinema soon back tracked and and blamed an over zealous member of staff and they didnt mind people bringing in their own sweets...maybe if they didnt charge a fortune for the stuff they sell they might find people would buy from them,if you have 2 or 3 kids it costs a fortune to take them.

Then they wonder why cinemas are on the wayne, personally I've not been to the pictures for over 25 years, but my other half goes nearly every week to the multi plexes in Manchester, and see enjoys it

I think the company concerned was Cineworld (don't quote me) ..can't imagine this lot backing down Lippycow, and will now bounce off to other groups. Also, imagine going to the one in Burnley .. which I think is extremely good ...and the indignity of having your bag searched .. would put you off enjoyment of the film all night. Have done both in the past ..bought theirs and taken in for my own kids and grandaughter ..all part of the night, isn't it. Anyway, they seem to do OK .. always a queue at the stands for their watered down coke and tasteless popcorn. The prices though are horrendous !!

This became the rule along time ago where I used to in Surrey and Hampshire.
I remember as kid taking fish and chips in newspaper in, all smelling of vinegar, never got complaints, but got loads of chips nicked as you through to get your seat. Hands all reaching from nowhere and grabbing a chip.

You heard it to G-C ? Mind you, think he intended staying in there all day for what he was taking in

Can't remember ever having taken fish and chips in with me Poppy ! .. still they sell hot dogs don't they ?

Know I am going off thread, but had some really good chips with a steak pie last week ..noticed where you live. Friend has moved to Walsden and got them from that Fish and Chip place beside the canal, opposite the station (can't remember the name). They were very tasty .. mmm .. :)

That's the one .. thanks Poppy .. you could always have a bag of chips or the Cheese and Onion Pie (if not one of those very strict veggies like).

The apple pies look 'to die for' too.

The prices they charge in the cinema are ridiculous.

There are 3 large cinemas here so if one refused to let you in with your own snacks people would use the other two,so the competion for customers is high here they have to keep us sweet
