He's the guy Johnny Depp is playing in my avatar, in the film 'Fear and loathing in Las Vegas'. I've not read all his work, as some of it is hard to get hold of...maybe not for long now as the vultures will be hovering no doubt to pick his bones clean. What I have read has been well worth it - he was a total one-off, who inspired a generation of writers (good and bad), but his style could never be equalled.
I think this quote from the front of falilv sums up his life to some degree:
