This is a discussion on Gordon Brown within the General Chat forums, part of the General category; What do you think of him and the whole situation? I personally think there should have been a general election ...

I think that I heard on the news that he is to call a General election next year - suppose he wants to 'get his feet under the table' first to improve his chances. I dont think he has 'charisma', but he was a good chancellor - will have to wait and see what he gets up to.

| I wasnt happy - i wanted someone to challenge him. Simple reason because then it would have given us a choice to decide who we wanted to lead the labour party and the country. I might have voted for him but then again i might not. By the way i was ill and forgot to vote for deputy!!! lol

As I have said before.............. I don't really know what his skill as PM will be, but by Christ he annoys the life out of me, keep doing that silly thing with his gob after every sentence DIV!!!!!!

You have to think though, is he the best man for the job. The answer is probably yes, but think of his track record as chancellor. Mr Darling has got some awfully big shoes to fill in that role, and you cant honestly think that the exchequer will perform as well under Darling as under Brown, a specialist Economist. I had heard that there was going to be a snap election in early 2008, which would greatly trouble the Tories, as David Cameron would actually have to come up with something. I dont think he has the same charisma, or will have the same respect from other world leaders as Blair did, and to be perfectly honest, in a few months, they will miss Blair so badly.

Personally I dont trust him as far as I could throw him. Even a Fifer dosnt trust another Fifer which dosnt bode well. He will be far from disappointed as he is PM and that was all that matters to him and he would have got it by hook or by crook. As for getting his feet under the table its a ploy so he can spend time as PM try and make an impact. He is desperate enough to get the job so wants a shot before an election which though the tories are at blues and two's he could still lose. Sweatpea you are right about the immigrants/migrants/asylum seekers issue but more because he wont have the time if he calls an election next May. Should he have been challenged hell yes he should. Even if it was a dummy runner a better idea would have been had on how popular he was with his own party members Alister Darling will not have full control in his role as chancellor because after 10 years in the job he wont be that keen to let go. Add to that his tendency to be a control freak. Looking at the cabinet how many are going to stand up and argue with him? Charisma wise a wet lettuce wins hands down as being dour is what he is good at. If the conspiracy freaks wanted an answer then he as a Scot is out to humble England and show who is the real boss. In reality as this has been kicking about since the death Of John Smith and was as been suggested it probiley was an "arranged" setup. Scots leading the party and has worked as they and the party were elected 3 times on the bounce so there must be something for them in England as if worried people could have avoided voting Labour and stopped them getting in. All in all will it work only time will tell but personally though I am not a Brown fan I can live with it. His biggest test will come with the SNP up here in Hollyrood if they push to try and gain independence. Should Westminster play the reduction in Scots MPs in the house it plays into their hands and that will be bad for both countries. While its still a union of sorts we have to accept that Scots MP's are going to vote in the contensious issue of English only issues which has an irony of its own. For years England had a say in what Scotland did and now the shoe is on the other foot its detested. This is something Brown could work at solving before it is blown out of proportion.
