Default The Good Samaritan (not)

Last night leaving work down Moscow Mill street in Ossy, a youngish man in a heavy fluorescent working jacket suddenly keeled over on the pavement and went out like a light. I pulled up opposite to see if I could help.

Nobody else was taking a blind bit of notice.

As I waited to get out of my car 'cause of passing traffic, he got up and would appear he was extremely drunk. He carried on his irregular path (understatment) up Spring Hill Road.

Yes, Yes, I told myself .. he is just very, very drunk, albeit 5 p.m. !

I set off back home, but haunted me all night long as to whether this was the case and perhaps not something else, as has happened in certain cases.

Even so, still wish now I had checked, even if he was bladdered, would have been harmless anyway. Feeling guilty.:sorry:

You did all you could. We found a guy in a similar state staggering down the middle of the Halifax Road one night, it was very dark and he was wearing dark clothes, when we got close he starting punching the air and waving his fists, so we backed off. We were going the same way home so we waved at the traffic to warn them. He went down a side street never knowing the chaos he had behind him.

The problem is these days you never know when your'e being setup. He could have been acting so that when somebody came to help he actually turned on them. Some of his mates could have been round the corner ready to help.

Cynical yes but it's the state of the world we live in now :noidea:

You did what you could, and to be honest if people are going to so drunk then they deserve the consequences.

No Dave, he wasn't acting at all I can assure you ... I know you have to be careful, but afraid one of those people who go in feet first ... stupid me .. even tell the youngsters in town when they spit call them 'dirty sods' to their face.

Didn't want a pat on the back for my reaction, in fact, a little ashamed did not do what I wanted to do.

I think I'd have been like you Katex, not knowing really what to do for the best. He may well have been drunk and if he was he could have been violent. On the other hand he may have had a mild stroke which could have given the appearance of being drunk as he struggled to his feet and staggered off. His speech would even have been slurred too which would have added to the impression of him being drunk.

My Dad had a stroke whilst he and Mum were on holiday in Scotland and out for a walk. Although she pleaded with passers by to help all she got was abuse and insults for him being drunk at that time of day. He hadn't even had a drink.

Yet in spite of that I would still be worried as a woman alone about trying to help someone just in case they were just drunk and turned nasty as drunks can often do. It's difficult isn't it? Let's just hope he was only drunk and went home and slept it off.

While staying in Etruria a few years back because of work I was out having a bimble around the area when I saw a guy fall down the embankment on a bridge over the canal. I couldnt see or hear him but phoned 999 and explained what happened ie had seen his guy take a tumble. They duly sent help and he was hauled out and was drunk but known to the emergency services. At first I thought it served him right but then thought what if something had happened I could never have lived with the guilt.

Once he was ok it wasnt so bad but can understand the guilt about not making sure katex but you have to think of your own safety as well but you went ahead and helped which makes you a better person than those that ignored the incident. I have on occasions helped people that are drunk and once with police help but that is my nature and I aint ashamed to admit it.
