Metric ??

See we have been given relief again, due to pressure of the metric martyrs, for avoiding the inevitable of eventually going metric.

Ok, being an oldy and love our traditions and ways, find it very hard to picture weights/measurements in cms, and certainly very labouring when you are explaining a measurement to someone as 137 x 137 cms instead of 54 x 54".

Can also understand will be a huge job amending all the road signs, however, we soon got used to the new money, didn't we?

Our children are now being taught metric in schools (still running along side Imperial, I think), but became apparent when my 24-year old son queried my statement that on this day, the temperature was 72 degrees F. "Mum, says he, speak English" !!! ... thought I was !! "Ok, son, that will be 72 - 32 x 5 and divide by 9 .. Ah, that is 22 C " Must admit, as we go abroad more for holidays, getting more used to centigrade meself.

We have got half way there .. best now to go the whole measure, don't you think ?

I think in imperial and then try to convert to metric, but most times I give it up as a bad job.
So i guess I'm glad that we can keep the old measures.

Also, last week, a young lady in her 20's approached me in Asda, she was holding a 1.5 kilo bag of carrots.. "Excuse me, sorry to ask a silly question, but have been asked by my Gran to get 5 lb Carrots, what is this ?" Had to think for a while, well, there are 2.2 pounds to a kilo, you have not enough. She graps another bag and would finish up with well over 6 lbs .. just hope they had a large family to feed. LOL

There was something on TV recently and they asked a variety of folk to guess the metric weight of a bag of apples...:noidea:even the young ones couldn't get it right.....but i suppose it is because they don't shop much for apples...well, the majority anyway.

I work in science, so am happier in metric. My husband works for an American company on American planes, so is only happy in Imperial.

I went to scholl after the conversion but always prefered imperial. Glad we won against the Euro dictators and I can ask for 1/2 lb of something instead of 229 grammes.

Suppose you get used to it though .. I used to think well, 4 apples are about a pound (tee hee I think) so will have to think that possibly 9 apples will be a kilo or thereabouts. Best to do it physically I guess to see, soon get used to it. Humph, says me ..

There must have been an awful lot of money spent to convert weighing equipment and such like....so someone has benefitted by it.
I always think...'why fix what isn't broken'....and our differences should be something to celebrate, not get rid of.
After all look at all the different town centres, now they all have the same chain stores on the High St.....hasn't it taken a lot of the fun out of visiting somewhere new....even in this country?

Ban metric completely. Why should we be the same as the rest of Euroland I would rather we kept are individual quirks.

Yes, and the financial burden of fighting the case gave him a heart attack and he died. I think his family should claim damages, if just to make a bloody point.
