Default education and truancy

This week truancy is in the news again and blame is placed at every door. How does everyone feel about this subject? Were you a truant? What would you do to resolve the lack of interest todays kids have in education?
My opinion is that whilst there are alot of good schools and teachers etc not enough choice is available subject wise for the less academic pupils which are often the ones playing truant. Subjects that used to be available years ago should be brought back or new one introduced, for example, bricklaying, cooking etc. There are shortages of skills today and i believe the building trade is one of them.
Maybe if the government actually listened to the kids and maybe even canvassed them they could create a system where kids looked forward to going daily?

i agree gc but we arent able to change the parents or the bad job they've done so far so lets try and change the kids and make them want more for themselves.

we are going to have to be tougher on unruly children ,cruel to be kind ,,,its no good saying well its a shame because their mum is a smackhead ,or they only have one parent ,it all boils down to respect ,if you respect other people they in turn will respect you ,it is a shame because today,s children are tommorrows future .doesent look very prommising to me .

Default education & truancy

I remember when I was at school (a long time ago) if you missed school the schoolboard chap would be knocking on the door that same morning. I blame the parents and the lack of discipline both at home and school for most of the truancies. It is a fact of life that some children are smarter than others. There will always be doctors and scientists, but they need tradespeople to build their houses and make there cars, thats where the rest of us come in.The main thing the school should concentrate on is the 3 r's. If you cant read and write you are on the road to nowhere. It is the parents job to check on their kids progress through school. They have the same problem here in Canada, but the current complaint is that the black children have the greater percentage of drop-outs. Some so-called acedemics are now suggesting that the blacks have their own schools. Thats very smart, it takes us back to the segregation of the 50's in the states. Thank goodness our usually spineless government has turned down that option. Its time people stopped blaming everyone but themselves for all thats wrong in the world and started taking the effort to better themselves. There are no free rides in this world,so make the effort and at least you will have TRIED.
Thats my twopence worth, like it or leave it.

Our schoolboard chap was Mr Barnes and we were frightened to death of him.
Still, it did us good and made sure we did'nt miss school.

I left school in 1968 and never had a day off unless i was ill and i mean at deaths door. Both my parents worked, and they used to say i might as well be at school learning something than sitting around feeling sorry for myself.

I remember in primary and junior school, we used to get a prize if you never missed school during the year. I remember my brother and me getting a book token for about 6 years on the trot. We dare not miss school as both our parents worked and they would know if we had missed.:graduate:
