Default London 2012 olympic bid.

Today London made it's bid to host the 2012 olympics.
It will be good both for London and Britain the bidders say,Is that true?
We seem to be up against Paris,Moscow and Newyork.
We will know next year in June.
What do you think?
Me I just think it's another way to give London money, £2billion they say,I think x10 then add a 0. More redevelopement for run down areas and sports venues in London yet again, nothing for us this is a London bid for london.
Or am I wrong?

Spot on, who cares about the prestige of holding the games? All I know is that even the submission for the bid has cost the taxpayers of this country millions already, to say nothing of the expenses of those involved jetting here, there and everywhere.
If the bid was successful. it would only be the south of the country that would benefit from the sporting facilities afterwards unless there were events held that were entered by northern athletes.
Our schools and hospitals are short of money and it would be better spent there.
Reports this morning talked of surveys held that supported the bid, one in London and the other in Scotland. That speaks for the country does it?

I'm not convinced by the argument that it will re-develop deprived areas, maybe it would get rid of poor people in an area - just for the rich to move in when the games are over. If they really did care about poor housing I think they should build affordable housing for the less well-off anyway - games or no games.
Wherever it is held we pay for it - who benefits? not you or I - the BAA get the cache, the developers get free buildings and the Olympics committee members get the back-handers.

Might as well be in China, still wont be able to get to it if it's in Londinium.

Mind you, it couldn't be held in Burnley, nowhere to park. :D

Co-incidence that if we get the games, Ken Livingstone (Red Ken) Will be guest of honour in China in 2008.

I think it will be an all to easy opportunity for people to not return home once they have been here. It's the last thing this country needs at the moment.

I wouldn't care where it was held if I thought we could afford it, but I don't think that is the case. We keep getting told we are one of the biggest economies in the world, yet we can't afford to look after our elderly who fought to keep us a 'free' country only to be ruled from Europe anyway (it will happen if we let it).

We are a country living on credit, where the government want us to work and pay into the pension system until we drop dead - where is the incentive in this?
Everyone seem to worship at the alter of money - look what Christmas has turned into, a shopathon where parents have lost the ability to say no to every whim of their kids - whast does this teach them? Not how to control money for a start.

But I digress, I think I should start a new thread for that one...

I think it should stay in Greece, at least then they would have a use for all the new stadia and facilities built for the last games.

I saw a news report saying that the greek government spent all the public money in Athens, other parts of greece got nothing spent on public works, jobs etc and the games brought them nothing at all. Or is this just northern sour grapes?.

I never said that Madrid had also put in a bid for the 2012 games. After last night i hope they wo'nt get them. Black players were the suject of abuse that I thought had long been kicked out of sport.
