Drink does get a lot of flak, however smoking gets a lot of flak because anybody standing near a smoker has little choice but to breath in a smokers old smoke - or leave.

So within the atmosphere that it's done in, innocent bystanders suffer more directly from a smoker than they do from a drinker.
If you go out you have a choice to drink, no-one forces it on you without comitting assault. You get little choice but to breath in smoke, else leave the place you are at.

Currently drinking is still a sociably acceptable ting, smoking has become not so.

Drinks can & do also taste & smell a lot better than cigarettes.

Some doctors do also reccomend a small amount of drink is good for you, however I have never heard of any doctor that reccomends you have a few smokes.

Before you mention it, yes drink related violence is a problem.
There are lots in life, smoking & it's passive effects are one that can be solved a lot easier than drink related violence etc.

If officials say anything often enough the masses believe them and really they are acting like sheep not thinking for themselves. This year a couple of glasses of red wine are good for you, but next year or the year after it could be bad for you. Remember the go to work on an egg adverts supported by the medical profession? now they are saying the opposite.
1 in 20 in the UK are alcoholics and that has considerable effects on the NHS resources to say nothing of their families who have to cope on a daily basis.

Only thing with people who have a fag is it also effects others who are passive smokers.Drink is my vice I pay duty on it and like the smoker anyone who wants us to stop had better becareful cos if we all stopped what will they think of to tax extra duty on?Sugar ,cheese?Iam like anyone else who gambles, eats, shops, smokes, women, work anything we do can lead to problems if take to extreames. Why not tax drugs and prostitutes? As I say I pay duty on my may vice. People do'nt need drink to make trouble, The thing is also I have known people who say they do'nt drink do but do it in secret. You only live the once,so if you like to do these things do what I do, enjoy your self and dont bleat if it cost, makes you fat, kills you, just do'nt hurt anyone else. It's later than what you think!

Thanks Wayneyboy, you have emphasised the point I was trying to make. Just lately we are being told we as a nation binge drink, overeat and have to stop smoking. If the ban on smoking is carried out, how soon will it be before it could also apply to drink and food? I am sure they can find some research that could lead to rationing food again just as they did in the war.
I can accept that passive smoke is unpleasant, but the exhaust fumes from cars and lorries cause just as much if not more damage. But no concerted efforts are being made to enforce different types of fuel that are not harmful. the smokers are an easy target.

not all smokers are ignorant to others...i smoke..yikes, but NEVER inflict my habit on others. Before anyone jumps on me to say that i must do in social situations etc...i seriously dont. Im a mother who knows the dangers to others so all my smoking (i dont smoke loads) i do away from others.
I dont drink or at least rarely so im not guilty of being the pub pariah lol.
It bugs me how people can say they hate smokers or dislike smokers...why? Its smoking thats disliked, whats the person done to you?
I dont hate drinkers despite the fact i grew up with drinking induced violence in the home.

Well said Delly, many smokers respect the feelings of others but because of all the hype are afraid to speak out in their own defence.

I Dont like smokers because not only does their clothes, hair, house, breath smells they or the majority are ignorant to the fact that other people have to breathe in their smoke.Bring in the ban! as quick as you can! is what i say!As to drink i agree with Wayneyboy in moderation, i shall have two or three gin and tonics tonight and enjoy them as it is Friday! have a good weekend everyone! :) :) :) :yelrotflm

have you heard the old addage ,Its ileagle ,Its immoral ,or it makes you fat, well i fall into the last catigory, but its so true ,idont smoke but like a drink ,and i believe in everything in moderation, idont object to people smoking except for instance we were in a nice restaurant, when an oldish gent who had finnished his meal lit up a cigar,he was oblivious to the fact that it was putting all the other diners off their food,so i agree with the no smoking ban there, but live and let live comes to mind.G.C.

The key is tolerance and consideration for others. Kiki people who drink also smell of it as does their homes and clothes, so it isn't only smokers who offend others. It all depends on your choice of enjoyment and I would defend anyones right to have a drink or smoke in a free country without been made to feel antisocial.

It's everyones right to drink or smoke in their own home, even outside, it's even others right to smoke providing that they are not constricting someone else's right to breath smoke free air.

You may be considerate etc when you smoke, however there are a great deal more who are not. even areas that are designated non smoking, there is always the ones that choose to ignore it, or to smoke just at the doorway so the smoke filters inside.

As for drinking, that too can have awful odours, stains etc & the health consequences can be as bad, however it's usually for the one person rather than others.

I vehemently hate fag smoke, mainly because of it's affects on my breathing (asthma).
I don't drink because I see little point in flushing all my money down the loo.

I have the occasional whine (lol) I even had 5 pints on a trip out this year (thats a yearly total), so thats my lot till Xmas.

Matty you sound like a binge drinker to me. :)
We can't live in a nanny state people have all sorts of things to get hooked on. Here are things people I've known been told they have a problem with.
Fruit machines, fags, drink, football, the lotto, scratch cards, bingo, fishing, golf, snooker, going out, shopping, store cards, bills, cars, fried food, salt, sugar, cafine, darts, fatty foods,tv,women, and one bloke was hooked on garden gnomes ,Old Tommy had about three hundred.
I could go on but life is full things THEY who are they? do'nt approve of.
Never been told work was bad for me! :) :) :)
