It must be, ignorance of care of the fish that we catch.

Either that or just totally thick.

There I was fishing today, having a total blank of a day, guy 2 pegs along from me catches a nice big Carp.

Good for him I think.

Till he starts to try & pose with it for a photo to be taken by his son.

The guy is at least 6 foot tall, pick the carp up, holds it to his chest while waiting for his son who is messing with a digital camera.

Then the guy drops the fish, smack onto the hard pathway.

Oh dear...

What does he do, he picks it straight up & holds it to his chest again.

THEN DROPS IT AGAIN!

The fish had been dropped over 10 times it's body height twice.
Heck knows what damage that did to it's internal organs.

Then it gets slipped back into the water, most likely to be discovered floating dead in the morning. A nice big Carp that has taken years to grow & given pleasure to many an angler being caught & returned.

And guess what, he only catches another fish & starts to hold it to his chest for yet another photo while standing up again!

I couldn't take it any more, I had to either leave or I would have blown my top at him, but he was way bigger than me (like a BSH) so I shouted at him to kneel when taking photo's and left.

I hope the guy gets a damn good talking to from the bailiff's over fish care because if I see him treating fish like that again I will be getting him banned from the club waters.

It's not "only a fish"!

It's a living thing that has taken several years to get to that size.
It was a 14lb ish fish, which would have taken 3-4 years at least to get that big.

Is it also OK to treat a cat/dog etc in such a way that it is likely to die?

well sorry Mattylad but do you not thing after the fishes tongues been peirced a hundred times and dragged out of the enviroment it lives in then thrown back time after time they get a bit fed up? Nothing against fishing but cant understand how angry you are

I would of been mad too! I think people should have a thought about any living creature and that fish must have been in great pain!

Cant understand why they put them back anyway.....surely damage is done when they catch them the first time.Some of them hooks are pretty nasty!

nasty game this fishing all these hooks and that why dont you just leave them alone

not only do anglers harm the fish they catch be-it by dropping them or by putting a size 10 (or whichever) hook on the line for the fish to inadvertently chomp on ,some cause unnecessary harm to other wildlife such as swans ducks etc by leaving unwanted fishing line, shots, floats lying around instead of picking them up and taking them home or as i used to do cutting the discarded line into small pieces whilst waiting for a bite... its them that you should be mad at, i mean come on fish are bred to be caught and eaten swans ducks (in some cases) are not

Fish are living creatures I aggree with every one who said that , so why not leave them in peace. I allways try to fill them up with bread when anglers come along so they wont go after the hooks.

I agree with you Mattylad, that is no way to treat a carp or any other fish and the bailiff should be told.

As for the rest of the posts on this thread, must of it is anti angling claptrap, and people should know what they are spouting off about. Let's make something clear here, fish do NOT feel pain; they have no neo-cortex which is the part of the brain which registers pain and fear. So the analogy 'like having your tongue pierced' is rubbish (fish do not even have a tongue).

Most anglers are now educated enough to know not to leave discarded tackle and line laying about. Also lead weights under 1 oz are illegal.

Also Poppy please don't try to fill the fish with bread as you will kill them!!
bread has no nutritional value to a fish so if you give them lots they will actually starve.
