No, I don't think it's a waste of time. When anyone is trying to help someone else, it's NEVER a waste of time.
When people are letting their feelings be known to a buch of faceless polititions, ESPECIALLY the world leaders, it's NEVER a waste of time.
It makes me sick when someone can say, "Africa's leaders are corrupt so we must turn our backs on their people and let them starve."
If any of you saw a child, starving so badly that he/she was skeletal, on the streets of Burnley, I take it you'd just blame the parents and walk on by then?
It doesn't matter that it's a different country, it doesn't matter that they are a different colour from us, they are HUMAN BEINGS, they need aid, we can supply it. If at the same time we can shame Africa's leaders into doing more for their people, and show them that we (through our leaders) are losing patience with them, then all the better.
Live Aid made a BIG difference to millions of starving and dying men, women and children, and was THE biggest music event of the 20th century, Live 8 could make a big difference again, give it a chance eh?

Look at that, not one swear word.

These concerts are the start point for The Long Walk To Justice, the one way we can all make our voices heard in unison.

This is without doubt a moment in history where ordinary people can grasp the chance to achieve something truly monumental and demand from the 8 world leaders at G8 an end to poverty.

The G8 leaders have it within their power to alter history. They will only have the will to do so if tens of thousands of people show them that enough is enough.

By doubling aid, fully cancelling debt, and delivering trade justice for Africa, the G8 could change the future for millions of men, women and children."
...................
Whether you get a ticket, listen to it on the radio, watch it at home or on the web…just make sure you are a part of it! It will be the biggest concert that’s ever been staged – and the most important.

I can't see it doing much good, except for the awareness it raises in the general public. The countries that are suffering are run by dictators who are not interested in change, only filling their own pockets.
I don't think Bush is really interested in relieving debt/famine in Africa either - he's probably just after more factory-farming land to grow soya beans to fuel all our cars in the future
What I want to know is what is Africa's trade going to be once they go industrialised, and what effect this is going to have on the environment? Cut down more forests, increase emmissions...it's already predicted that we would need the resources of 4 planet earths to satisfy the needs of the growing industry in China - and the cars they will all buy with their new-found wealth now that all our manufacturing industries have outsourced to China. They won't have emmissions controls over there don't forget.

Bob Geldof has said his Live 8 protests will be "a glorious failure" because world leaders will "probably not" agree to all his demands on African poverty.
He told the AFP news agency he likes "no part" of organising the concerts and rallies to pressure G8 leaders to improve trade, aid and debt in Africa.

"Will that happen? Probably not. So will I have failed? Yes I guess."

Meanwhile, Bono met European Commission leader Jose Manuel Barroso on Thursday. He told world leaders: "Don't blow it."

Bono and Geldof are spearheading the campaign to persuade the planet's most influential people to focus on poverty in Africa.

The point is, he's TRYING to do something about it instead of just saying "Oh well, nothing we can do will change a thing so let's just turn our backs on it."
If everybody else had the same attitude, we'd live in a much, much better world.
