Burnley Wood I had such hopes for it even 6 months ago but to be honest I think it is going downhill again fast. It could and should be a really nice area but it wont be
whilst the council dont do anything about the rubbish,
whilst some residents dont care about their surroundings,
whilst the refuse collectors dont worry about where the rubbish goes i.e. into lorry onto pavement,
whilst the kids are allowed to run around at all hours of the night and stopping people entering the shops asking for 20p,
whilst the broken glass is left everywhere,
whilst the dog **** is left everywhere,
whilst the boarded up windows advertise neglect and squalor,
whilst the weeds grow everywhere in a futile attempt by mother nature to soften the whole disgusting mess,
whilst the shabby state of the exterior of many houses is ignored and I include frayed and dirty flags flying from upstairs windows,
whilst houses can be broken into doors busted open windows broken etc and NOBODY hears a thing,
whilst people can have 3 or more dogs closed up in a tiny yard living and sitting in their own **** which is then hosed out onto the back alley now and then
and of course, whilst e.g. those disgustingly designed new houses like a blot on the face of the park, the town, the county, the country - honestly what a horrible mess - are being built with the permission of the council who try to describe them as improvements! (I honestly thought until they were finished that they were going to be small industrial units...)

whilst we have all that and more going on what hope Burnley Wood?

Can someone explain to a non-Burnley resident the whys and wherefores of Burnley Wood. Is this a new estate? A newly regenerated area of town?

I have noticed in the past that it doesn't matter what councils do to 'improve' an area if the residents treat it like a slum it will be/stay/become a slum.

Burnley Wood is an area of terraced housing which has had 'loads of regeneration money spent on it' and now looks like a bomb site added to which it has some of the most filthy people in the county living in it. Dirty nappies are just chucked over back walls and where they land no one gives a sheet. Dogs and it is nearly always plural, are shut up in small back yards barely big enough for a wheelie bin, day in day out living in their own mess which is hosed out under the gate now and then to lie festering in the back alley. Houses are boarded up for periods stretching to years, as part of the regeneration project before being knocked down.

The area itself has Townley park/Healey Wood park/the canal on its borders and should/easily could be a lovely little suburb of Burnley. To be honest though the problem is not the area it is the people who apparently were shipped in a few years back - people who should really be living under a stone somewhere - and the council who pontificate and do nothing. Their indecision, inefficency and general uselessness is amazing in its totality.

The long time Burnley Wood residents are lovely people. Most of the newcomers are not.

There is also, because of the cheapness of the houses a lot of rental properties and a lot of money spent on these to make them really nice homes but because of all the other problems in Burnley Wood the class of private tenant leaves a great deal to be desired in many cases.

This is not of course a problem only in Burnley Wood but whilst the Data Protection act is used by Council departments to facilitate fraud and law breaking amongst the underclass I really dont see anything improving much.

People ruin areas. People have ruined Burnley Wood whether by being moved in from, I have been told, an area of flats which were demolished or by their incredibly badly thought out regeneration.
There were high hopes for the place to improve and become a really nice community again but I don't think anyone holds those hopes very high anymore.

I know areas like that and it doesn't matter how much money the council throw at it, it will not cease to be a problem whilst people of that mentality remain there.

An idiot who took over a rented house I know, when the previous respectable tenant died, solved the problem of all the things left in the house that he didn't want by dragging them all into the back street (including some rotten potatoes) and setting fire to them, thus creating a health hazard and setting a back yard door on fire in the process.

What can you do about such people? Ship them out? Where to? It's unfair on the decent residents though having to live amongst all that filth and squalour in what could be a lovely area.

I remember when they refurbished an area of Perth (Scotland) many years ago under the title of 'slum clearance' and moved all the residents out and into a new area of the city which they rapidly proceeded to trash. My uncle who lived a few miles out of the city said "You can take people out of the slums but you can't take the slums out of people."

Maybe they should just round up people like this from every town and create a place for them to live in their own little pig-sty fashion where they won't affect anyone else.

The big problem with Burnley wood is Private landlords renting sub standard houses to sub standard people. Some of the states you see walking round here[waiting for the dealer]look like a Living dead video.

While Im on the subject the other thing that annoys me about B.wood is the amount of people who think the world owes them a living. You see them in the summer, sofa on the pavement and can in hand when your on your way to work. These people have no intention of getting a job and they keep breeding and we keep paying. It needs someone with a backbone to get this scum working not some tree hugging Guardian reader saying they need help.Perhaps we could start them clearing the mess they and their offspring have caused. If they started making people work for their benifits it would push them into getting a job.I am 44 and have worked since leaving school. Some jobs have been long hours for little pay but Ive always paid my own way.Why sould I pay to bring these social scrongers children up.Make them work.

Contact your local CBM/PCSO (PC John Fisher, PCSO Bill Ogden, PCSO Cathy Clough) team via the police website or get hold of someone from "Streetscene" via the Burnley council website to tackle anti-social issues including rubbish and long term issues.
John and the team are very keen to tackle problems in the area but theres a few dealers/users believed to be in the area and as a result will take a higher priority in most cases.
Try Streetscene...

I agree with all comment made.

They sit about drinking from early morning.
They rent houses and trash them then 'disappear' though only up the road or into the next street.
I don't know about bad landlords letting bad houses but to be honest after having let out some very nice houses to supposedly decent people who had references etc and then seeing the state they have left them in after living there rent free for months I dont think any housing is bad enough for these cruds. Most of them should be living under a stone somewhere.
I also agree about them being allowed to breed and us paying for it but if we say such things we are accused of Fascism if not worse.

Whilst the council (and this applies to all councils not just Burnley) but whilst they hide behind the Data Protection Act this will continue.

All it would take would be for the LA's (Local Authorities) to join up the dots on all claims for help with rent and request a certificate of some sort from the previous landlord stating that all rent is up to date and house left in good condition BEFORE making any payments at a new address and the problem would be solved.

I truly wish there was some way of naming and shaming because I could do so for a fair proportion of the population of Burnley Wood right now.

I have worked in many areas and I have to be honest and say Burnley Wood is not the worst but it is very very close to being so.

Children, and I mean children - little things, walking the streets at way past my bedtime. Young preteens drinking and harrassing customers at the local shop on Branch Road for 20p. Dog fouling on an unprecedented scale. Dogs kept in tiny back yards and slowly going mad living in their own filth which is occasionally hosed out onto the back alley. Broken glass everywhere.

I know there are a fair few in Burnley Wood who work but there is also a larger proportion who don't but amazingly they all have cars, can afford to smoke, have widescreen TVs, leather suites, modern furniture, 'name' trainers, bling, can drink almost non-stop 24/7 seven days a week, shop at Tesco and manage to have numerous children etc.

As non-earners they should be living on the breadline and doing some sort of community work for their benefit. I realise in some areas this would be difficult but in Burnley Wood they would never be short of chores as they clean up after their grubby/filthy/antisocial/disgusting selves.

These people know how to work the system and it is the leaders of the country/local authorities fault for letting them. Its time we had leaders that acted in the interests of the hard working and honest majority and not hide behind a World of spin.I do not have much of a political leaning but I know whats right and wrong.

Stop whining and do something about it. Get involved in your community. Find out what you can do to help. You won't change the world but you'll help chip away the bit that you can... Streetscene is one way but you can do stuff yourself too!

Streetscene.

I have just spent sometime looking online to find out exactly what Streetscene can do (with or without my help). All I have found is rubbish removal (bin men?). The Burnley Council site is down (at the time of writing) so I can find little else except job adverts and a piece about how successful giving away free bins in Burnley Wood has been??? Someone actually thinks it will make a difference?

Taking rubbish as being the main activity of Streetscene I would say they are not effective. I personally have emailed twice with photographs of rubbish left lying in the road and pavement outside my house after they have visited to collect it. They chuck it aboard and if it lands where it should 'well done' if it doesn't 'tough sh**'.

I have never had a response from my emails and the rubbish stayed where it lay, or blew about in the wind as the case may be.

I have spoken to people at Streetscene reference fly tipping in the back yards of empty properties. No suggestions on dealing with it just great big bills for me in paying to get the rubbish removed and threats of this that and the other if I dont. Recycling on the users part, in Burnley Wood, involves finding an empty house and dumping your dirty nappies, empty booze containers, the odd chair or sofa, a couple of mattresses, some used sanitary towels, the odd fridge, a couple of cookers, barbed wire, a dead cat, food waste (sacks and sacks of it) etc. Recycling on the Council's part in Burnley Wood involves getting the poor sod who owns the property to pay a private firm to remove the rubbish.

Get involved with Streetscene? How? You mean help these people I see wandering around with their ID tags hanging 'importantly' around their necks checking what goes into the community skip that no-one knew about until it turned up? I for one have a job so my contribution is more of a financial one helping a large proportion of Burnley Wood residents 'live the life of Riley'. My taxes are paid to contribute my share to the removal of rubbish (should say ALL rubbish), the cleanliness of my surroundings, the education of the youth in my area (hahaha) etc. However, apart from my financial contribution I am too busy keeping myself afloat to be worrying about helping a bunch of ungrateful, lazy and mostly blatent scroungers keep their own part of ship clean.

If I can see the regular washout of backyards with all the dog excrement etc flowing down the back alleys why can't Streetscene? They are paid to do so. I'll give them a clue shall I? Check out the area you so kindly gave FREE wheelies to, Mind your nice shiney shoes though!
