Hughes family of Water St Padiham
I've been looking for any information about my grandfather's family. He was Edward Hughes, known as Teddy, and was said to look just like Harry Secombe, but with red hair. He was born 1923 (not sure if in Burnley or in the Irish Republic, my information conflicts!). His parents were John Hughes and John's wife Catherine, nee Connell.
Catherine died in April 1935 of double pneumonia. She was only 38 and left John with five children, Edward, Patrick, John, Ellen and James. Ellen married a Mr Kelly and had two daughters, Teresa and Eileen. Ellen died in 1996, I think, having lived all her life in Burnley.
John was killed in April 1950 in an accident on the line at Hapton. He was struck by a light engine whilst working on the line.
Teddy married a London girl, Kathleen Westley, and they had a daughter, Catherine, in 1946, but the marriage ended when the baby was 6 weeks old, and Teddy never saw his daughter again, who was told that he had died in the Korean War in 1953. It was not until many years later that she learned that Teddy had died in Nottingham in 1985, so she could have looked for him, but that chance to see him was taken away from her.
Has anyone ever heard of any of these people, or met them? Teddy's daughter is my mother. It would mean a lot to her to know anything at all about her dad and his parents; it has been sad for her that she never knew them. Any information, impressions, anything, would be very welcome.
We do know that John, Catherine and the children were Roman Catholics and worshipped at St John's. I believe John and Catherine are both buried at Padiham cemetery.
thanks, in hopeful anticipation!
Liz
