Default Long Drops- Tin Baths and Cast Iron Ranges.

Does anyone remember any of the hard times, emptying chamber pots into a bucket and taking it to the 'long drop' toilet, beating the fire and blackleading the fireplace, dad getting bathed in the kichen.
Or am I the only geriatric pensioner on the site, come on out of the closet you old un's. :hehetable:

No, I don't. We lived in a prefab which had a bathroom, inside toilet, fridge etc. We were much better off than the rest of the street! I do remember ice on the inside of the window though. You don't see that now.

I loved that prefab and would move straight back into one if I could.

Yes, I remember those days, getting bathed in front of the fire in a tin bath, and also emptying chamber pots in the long drop, and running the water to make sure the bucket tippled. Oh those good old days!!!

:ello: You'r dead right there Mary folk were more friendly in those days, grandparents lived with you and were not shoved in some 'care' home, older generations were respected and young people sought their advice. the tippler yes run the tap and tip it, our's got jammed 'open' luckily, on windy days it used to blow up your backside. First luxury we had were coconut matting on the floor, a bit rough on the old knees though, yes they were 'happy' days. :hand:

I think the only time I can remember being warm in bed were when our Ricky wet the bed, We lived with aunty and slept three to a bed 'topping and tailing', the winters were much colder then, but people were a lot warmer "lend us a cup o sugar luv. :second: "

Unhappy Re: Long Drops- Tin Baths and Cast Iron Ranges.

We didnt have a tin bath, but ive started writing down my memories of a 50,s childhood for my grandchildren . My grandad who was a Burnley policeman died and my grandmother used to play on her gramophone "The laughing policeman" I suppose to cheer herself up! I heard this record constantly when i was little and it takes me wayback when i hear it again ,to see her sitting on her rocking chair remembering him!

Red face Re: Long Drops- Tin Baths and Cast Iron Ranges.

Seems like I must join the list of old fogeys, yes I remember the long drop, out in the back yard (no garden in those days), living in a small mid terrace, cobble streets, neighbours in each others houses, don't me cheeky to next door, cos if they didn't give you a clout round the ear, your mum or dad would when they found out, or the local beat bobby would scare the life out of you by threatening to take you home, he didn't have to ask your name or address, HE ALREADY KNEW IT !!!

Working as a plumber in the 40's and early 50's I well remember the "long drops" or 'tipplers". We used to dig up back yards and replace them and the drains with W.C's. In Lancashire's rainy climate there were days I would rather forget. As for the old cast iron fireplaces, they were all broken up with a sledgehammer and new tiled monstrosities of "modern"' fireplaces installed. I understand those old cast iron jobs are worth a lot of money now.
Also remember when about 4 or 5 houses shared an outside toilet. During the winter when the water pipe froze they would argue over who had to pour a bucket of water to flush it. Everybody "forgot" and the poor plumber had some awful places to work in. Luckily the cold kept the smells down, ugh!!!
No wonder I came to Canada!! Happy memorise, I wonder. Cheers Vetbike.

Dont remember long drops or tin baths but I do remember my mum hanging the washing out on a line right across the front street, think there was only about 2 people had cars on our street back then.

We had an indoor bath with shower in the late 40s but we still had the loo at the bottom of the garden, with neatly cut newspaper on a piece of string.
We didn't have a fridge (not sure they had reached the UK) but my uncle and cousins were the "Legatti brothers ice company" so we had an ice box with gigantic blocks of ice and in summer we had blocks about 3foot long by 2foot
wide we used to sit on in the garden.
frozen bums all round
