Talking Palace Theatre

My Grandpa used to train the spotlights in the Palace, going back nearly a century ago! He used to tell me stories about some of the old music hall stars .His favourite was Houdini.."He were a clever b....r" Does anyone know if any archives exist as I would love to know the list of stars who appeared there.
Grandpa was Jimmy Robinson and for many years he had an "open all hours"shop at 95 Plumbe Street. I remember the war years there if anyone is interested,

Wondered if you remember the Wimpybar in the Palace, I cooked the wimpys, this was when the palace had gone to bingo.
A lot later in 1972 i was manager of the "Woods " music shop at the bottom of Manchester rd, & it brought tears to my eyes when i saw the Palace stage come down. Ah memories.

It was actually a few hundred yards toward Burnley Centre from where Manchester Road/Bridge Street/St James' Street intersected. I have forgotten the name of the shop on the corner of Bridge Street/St James' Street, but then there was Oddies, (shop) the Burnley, Colne & Nelson Bus office, an alley (Public Toilets), The Palace Theatre, The Grand Cinema .......... and so on. During the late 1940s the favorite meeting up spot for teenagers on Saturday night was under the Grand canopy -- all the bus routes used to stop and start in the Centre in those days.

Smile Re: Palace Theatre

Hi

Lancashire Exile here. We used to meet outside the Palace on Saturday mornings to walk round the centre and go to Websters Record Shop to listen to the new records. About a dozen of us used to go, listen to the records in one of the booths and then buy 1 record between us - they cost 6s 9d!!

Happy days!!

Your grandpa probably put the spotlight on an act I am trying to trace called Rameses. He appeared at the Palace on August 19th. 1912. Does anyone have information on him please? He was a very big star Egyptian dressed magician / illusionst travelling to the USA in 1910 South America in 1913 and also later to South Africa. Remember this was 1912. so air travel had not arrived.

Hope somebody out there can help. Anyone got a theatre poster or programme from his appearance. Are there any archives of The Palace theatre. Where could I find a picture of the outside of of the interior please
Many thanks
Chris
