Might be able to flog 'em over on Accyweb (temporary Hyndburn),reminiscing as about these as I post 'cept one of them thinks he remembers that they doubled up for scraping the hard skin of yer feet !

Soon put him on the right lines though, think he is getting confused with the pumice-stone.

I remember them well, my mum used to have me doing the front and back step when I was a kid. You could have had a goldfish instead of the donkey stone but it would have made to much mess. Not quite the same result.

Red face Re: Rag a bonefor a donkey stone

I think ive told this tale beforethat i actually bought something off the rag and bone man-- It was a pony skin coat, tan and white cost me £2-00,1920 so in the late sixty,s if you had seen this weird woman in a coat walking around Burnley it was me! the strange thing was i couldnt sit down in it as it was so stiff! So it was hardly practical, waterproof though but didnt keep it long

Probably came from the donkey that pulled the cart, seemingly that is why they were originally called donkey stones .. tee hee.

I remember in the early 50s, I had bought a 1936 "Excelsior Manxman" Kept it in the backyard till the weather improved so I could work on it.
Thats until one day it had gone missing.......My wife fed up with the "Junk"... had swapped it for two .... Donkey Stones!!!
Took me ages to get the Bike back.....and I still have my wife.:Banane01:

Watching Old Steptoe reminds me of the rag and bone men of the past, horses not donkeys pulled these carts .

They were soft chalky stones you edged your steps with, this gave alovely white edge. People did this up until about the sixty,s! They did look nice!
