Default IT or computing jobs

Does anyone work in this line of work? I'm thinking of enrolling for a Foundation Degree in Computing, and someone I know has done one and says it's dull as dishwater when you finally get a job, and that you need to be really geeky. I've always been interested in computers and their applications, so thought it'd really suit me.

Go for what you think is right, the money is in "IT" and it could well be worth your while taking the course.
It also depends on what job you take at the end of it and what you make it.
You only live once!!
Good luck

I would go into the programming side of IT because this is what pays the real money. I want to be a programmer/coder and from what I have done so far I really enjoy it. GOOD LUCK ! :D

I quite fancy being a application programmer or working in network or technical support, but a lot of the time jobs sound better than they are when you're actually doing them. I suppose I could do the introductory year first to see if I'm suited or not, but I've thought about doing it for ages now, and think I'd really enjoy it.

Ta anyway. :D

I've spent the last 15 years working in the merry old land of IT, application development, packaging, network support etc and to be honest you’re right on both points

1 – the monies not bad, but 2 – it is dull as ditchwater :(

To be honest I’ve have got out of it years ago it I could afford to do so. Also if you want the money you’ll have to travel as there’s very little paying a decent wage in East Lancs so unfortunately it’s Manchester/Liverpool or Leeds every morning. Although after travelling to bl00dy St Helens every morning for the last five years (before that I’ve travelled to Manchester and Bolton) I’ve finally found a decent paying job in Burnley :)

If you’re looking for an IT course at college try and find one which is more applied and has a business or management aspect, there load of techies and number crunchers out there. Technologies are changing faster that they can write courses but if you can get some good organisation or project management skill they’ll help you progress for years to come and believe me the last thing you want is to be stuck on a helpdesk for any longer than you have to.

You could also try enrolling with a couple of IT contract agencies, there’s always entry level PC configuration contract jobs about. OK I accept these are normally mind numbing and the pays bad but it might be a foot in the door and some worth while experience

I can see the job interview now, "So Ms Flower, do you read science fiction, enjoy trainspotting, discussing roadworks on the A619?" :yelrotflm

:D I'm not get on the course then.

Cheers for the comments all, I'm actually going to go for the HND in Business IT course. Seems to cover all what I'm interested in and doesn't sound as thought the course will be as difficult as the Foundation Degree one. Who knows.
