Boy convicted of Goth park murder

A 15-year-old boy has been found guilty of murder after he kicked a woman to death because she was a Goth.

Brendan Harris set upon Sophie Lancaster, 20, in a Lancashire park after he and four other youths assaulted her boyfriend Robert Maltby.
Preston Crown Court heard the assaults in Stubbylee Park, Bacup, in August last year were "totally unprovoked".
Ryan Herbert, 16, had already admitted murdering Miss Lancaster. The judge lifted a ban on their identification. Preston Crown Court heard that the couple, who lived in Bacup, were targeted because they looked different.

A teenager has been convicted of the murder of a young woman who was killed "just for being different."

Brendan Harris, 15, will now be sentenced along with four other teenage gang-members who have already admitted their part in a savage attack in August, 2007.

After the verdict, judge Anthony Russell QC lifted an order banning identification of Harris and 16-year-old Ryan Herbert, who pleaded guilty to the murder earlier.

Sophie and her boyfriend Robert Maltby, 21, dressed differently, wore dark make-up and enjoyed obscure music but they did not necessarily identify themselves as 'goths'.

On August 10th 2007 they were part of a gathering of young people at a skate-park in Bacup, Lancashire.

They were confronted by a gang of alcohol-fuelled teenagers who were intent on trouble. At first they attacked Robert, one was heard to shout: "Let's batter him."

I watched the reports on the news, felt really sorry for Robert the boyfriend who they interviewed.

I was horrified to hear that the murderers and their families showed no remorse or regret for their actions throughout the investigation and court case. I just hope they are in for a nasty shock come sentencing time...but somehow doubt it.

How can they have no remorse? How can a 15 year old kill someone and not feel anything? I'm totally horrified by this whole thing. What kind of humanity can be like this?

One of the investigating officers described how Harris and his mother shocked detectives by laughing as he was questioned by police after being arrested over the young woman's murder.

Laughed? How on EARTH could they laugh? Her son has killed a girl and the mother laughed? She should be locked up too. She brought up her son to think it's funny to kick someone to death.

Yesterday it emerged that they had been found guilty of affray over a similar attack on a 16-year-old boy close to the same park four months earlier, but instead of being locked up were freed with a six-month community service order.

I also find this very disturbing. Can't imagine my parents laughing if I'd been arrested for ANYTHING when I was a teenager.

Some people just aren't fit to bring up children, how did we get into this situation? It seems a lot worse nowadays.

the parents are as much to blame for this as their kids to be honest.
i would be devastated if one of mine had anything to do with the police let alone murder someone its disgusting.
they should lock the idiot parents up aswel for producing and teaching their offspring such evil
