Keirby

Can anybody help me,where the Keirby hotel is now,was there once a Mill of some kind?.Im trying to do some research for a friend.:England:

I don't know a lot about the history of the Keirby hotel Gillian, My older brother used to work there and that's where he met his wife(he was a waiter and she worked on the front desk) it was called the Friendly hotle then, It's supposed to be haunted by a worker who fell down the lift shaft when it was being built,That's all I know but good luck with the project.

The Kierby hotel on Church St. was built a lot of years ago. I used to walk past there when I was a kid going to school. It was built on some derelict land where all there was at the time was a couple of small shops.The land was derelict from church street up to the back of the yorkshire hotel and the odeon cinema.

I forgot, they used to say that there was an underground passage from there all the way up to Towneley Hall as an escape route from there, although on reflection thats a bit hard to believe.

I used to walk the same route. The Kierby was started around 1959. They dug a huge hole for the underground car park. The joke at the time was that plans were drawn upside down and the roof was going in first! The site was occupied by the Kierby Brewery around 1850. When the hotel was built it took the same name.

Used to have a cleaning lady where I used to work who once worked at the Kierby. She used to tell me about all the performers that stayed there in the 60's when they were in town for shows. Gene Vincent and Bo Diddley being two of them, was really interesting, another tale was about a chambermaid who ended up marrying a millionaire guest.
My boss used to get mad if he came in the morning to find us in conversation instead of doing our work lol.

I used to walk past there every morning on my way to St.Peters school and all there was on that site where the Kieby was built was derelict land. I remember Sir Richard Attenborough staying at the Kierby when he was filming "Whistle down the wind" and he could be seen driving through the town in his big maroon Rolls Royce.
