Default End of an era

Ive just been in a pub thats swapping over to an indian restaurant. Its in a village that has no other pub, the church has closed whats next the school? Ive been going in that pub for 30 years. I went in with my mum & dad and sat there with a coke and half a lager - if the police came in the coke was mine otherwise i was drinking lager. When I was 16 i went in there on my own and the landlord served me half a lager and said thats the last time you will drink in this pub until you are 18. He kept that promise and when i walked in on my eighteenth he said here you are half a lager happy birthday. I'd been going round accy since my 16th birthday and drinking down there. But if i went in there i always drank coke or orange or if he was trying out the non-alcoholic lagers i had one of them but now its shut until it re-opens as an indian. Im maudlin arent i?

Sign of the times I guess, it's happening all over. Only the other day I noticed Coal Clough house looks like it's turning indian (Not sure if it's the whole gaff or just part of it?)

The harsh truth is that pubs aren't fulfilling peoples needs anymore, I don't think people go out to the pub during the week as much as they used to and I guess the pubs have suffered.

I don't think the smoking ban has helped, but don't flame me for saying it lol.

coal clough house is the third pub in burnley to recently chage to an indian, the other two being the bull and butcher on manchester rd and the black bull up harle syke - i'm a big fan of indian food - my favourite restaurant being the usha on rossendale rd (which coincidentally was also a pub - the running pump amongst other names), but one town can only accept so many restaurants surely?

In Darwen where I live theres loads of Indian Restaurants and Take Aways and theres loads of pubs too! It unusual for the only pub in a village to be closing down tho?!
I agree that pubs don't seem to be doing as well as they used to - and like its been said I think the smoking ban can only make things worse! Thats only my opinion of course!!

It's sad when places close down that are part of your childhood and hold memories. If my local closed it would be a shock to the system, it's always been somewhere to go where your guarenteed to know people and have a decent beer and a laugh.

There is a "Bollywood Restaurant "in Garstang which used to be a lovely quaint old teashop!

Its the Rising Bridge Inn and it was just across the road from me Willow now will have to either hike it to Baxenden or Haslingden or up the hill to the Farmers Glory. Even that is shut at the minute its being refurbished.

Really? That's a massive pub and quite a landmark building.
How long was it up for sale?

I remember their bonfires they had on the field behind the pub - they were massive!
