Default Wakes Weeks

Just wondering what is happening this year regarding the traditional Burnley holidays. Have they left them as the first 2 weeks in July even though the schoools don't finish until the end of the 3rd week, or have they now been officially scrapped ?

All schools now have the same hols starting the third week in July, the wakes weeks stay the same first two weeks in July

Out of curiosity who by or how is that decision made ?

I know it's not as relevant these days because most businesses are 52 weeks a year now with flexi holidays, but even last year there were a few I know of that closed for wakes weeks.

Wink Re: Wakes Weeks

The wakes holidays were set by cotton mill owners in the past with every town taking two weeks holiday at different times, so providing a continuous flow of cotton for the markets. Lancashire Education Authority decided last year to change the holiday arrangements for all schools to coincide with the regional holidays.

I will not comment on what I thought of the stupid decision made by people in Preston , but are any factories still going to close down the first 2 weeks of July ? I would have thought this would be horrendous for workers with children.

Talking Re: Wakes Weeks

I think the practise of factories closing down died out years ago, most places remain open with staff taking holidays by arrangement

They've done it in line with national because of workers that work out of the area - same problem applied, maybe if they brought the work time off & school time off in line at same time.

Accy still has their hols [think just after yours] but not many businesses take those holidays anyways apart from a few small shops that adhere to the tradition.
