Default Tsunmi disaster help

We have all felt shock, grief and the wish to do something to help the victims of the disaster. But is the latest suggestion from a NW Euro MP a good idea or just too much to ask. He wants each council in the NW to adopt a village or town in the disaster area to give long term support.
We have all dipped into our pockets to help, many more than once as various shops and workplaces have held collections. Let us not forget that the money given by the UK government is from taxes, not that I have any quibble with that. But that is also the man in the street giving again through this way, it is not the governments money as such.
So with Burnley Borough Council always saying they want more Community Charge every year and having not even enough money to ensure our dustbins were emptied over the holiday period, would you support money going out in this way if they decide to follow this suggestion?

i like many others have given and will continue to give if i can. I dont think adopting a town is a great idea...if anything its probably more a good political publicity stunt type thing than a genuine charitable gesture. We are a caring world and im sure that whilst help is needed we will all continue doing what we can without the political puppets from clown halls trying to give themselves good names.

I do'nt want to sound harsh but millons of people suffer every day all around the world. It's worse this time because it's so many all in one go.People will forget about this in time.

What upset me most over the weekend was to hear that in past disasters, governments who have promised money in the beginning fail to make good on their promises.
I too feel that political points are being made rather than the real concern ordinary folk feel about the disaster. But Waneyboy is right and people soon forget as we have seen in other areas of the world where there is famine and genocide still today.
I feel the only way forward is for a firm commitment and a fund set up by the G8 countries and the UN, that could be activated immediately in times of crisis. Each member country of the two organisations should have to put a sum of money in the pot each year so a good amount is available.

Nessie the real need is for people to care 365days a year. Unless we change human nature this will always be happening, people worry about their own lives, and just giving money every so often is not the answer, money goes astray,we are lucky millions are not,it's a hard world but it does'nt have to be.

Imho all third world debt should be wiped out, not 'frozen' as they government have also pledged. This would help solve many people's problems. This is a rich country, we complain and moan about things but we have no idea how the rest of the world live. Reckon it should be compulsory for all kids to have a taster of how they live! :)
