I grew up in the Whittlefield area, for the not so old it was between Gannow Top and the Mitre, most of it was demolished in the 70s,that area and those times were the things I liked most about Burnley. Can anybody hand on heart say that they would go shopping or to the pub without locking their door,in those days it was commonplace. My family were not rich but we were rich with neighbours, everyone watched out for one another and helped each other when anyone fell on hard times, which in many cases, ours included, was more often than not,to my knowledge in all the time I lived there we did,nt even have a lock on any door front or back but there was very little crime unlike the Burnley of today but you can say that about all or almost all of the towns and cities of the Britain of today. The world of today is a far worse world than it was in my younger days. There, that,s one gripe I,ve got off my chest and I feel a lot better for it.Cheers.

Keckfaro, I too was brought up in the Whittlefield area, and though it was not considered the best part of town - like you say, you could rely on neighbours to watch out for you. There was no looking behind you to see if anyone was following. I used to walk through the town centre up to Whittlefield when all the pubs were losing, after the youth club, and I never had any trouble with people losing control and bothering you. Of course I was sensible about it and walked around those folks, but nobody shouted obscene things or bothered me at all. Those were the days. Ry

I like Burnley because places like Towneley havent really changed that much! Money is put into places like that, forever remaining the same and when we are gone still they are maintained. But they ? Do they have their priorities right?I think we should argue that people matter more than buildings ? Am i in the minoritory?

Agree with what you are saying too Wayney boy "Slaters Terrace" is a favourite building of mine in Burnley , and i lived in the Towneley-Burnley Wood area and remember Slaters clock that i could see everymorning from my bedroom window and was a landmark!which sadly went with the rest of the building of my youth they were favourites of mine that i liked . Also i liked the old market and the shops near - Sutcliffe,s and Percivals.
