What the heck is Spanish Juice . . . . ?
And what flavour Jam butties
Didn't the Bull and butcher dabble with a name change to The Slaughtered Lamb once? Which resulted in the locals not going??? :yelrotflm

Can still buy the hard spanish at the chemists it makes a good cure for coughs if you scald it with lemons and brown sugar. Don't think kids shake it up in a bottle of water these days. A clough is a cleft in a hill or a ravine and I suppose that was the reason for the name. Cherry Fold is still there and a new school has just opened, St Hildas is to be joined with St Teds under the new plans and there is no news of what St Hildas will be used for.

I assume that it was called Spanish Jiuce, because it made you salivate all black juice when chewing on it.

This has reminded me of something, does anyone still make fizzy Sasperella? I've seen Dandelion and burdock, I miss the other black stuff!
I remember getting the still version in a glass at a stall on Blackburn market when I was younger and I think they sold the syrup there too. Or was that liquorice??

I like spanish juice San Migel,Astrella,Sol, :)
I used to go to Rawtenstall and they had a shop that sold all kinds of drinks like Bloodtonic(a pickmeup). It was a temperance bar and had all kinds of drinks and sweets and was all homemade. No idea if it's still there as I'm talking 13yrs ago.

your thinking of fitzpatricks ,wayneyboy ,they origanated from burnley they had a shop near the culvert and sold numerous wonderful drinks including sarsaparilla and dandilion and burdock,we also got claret and blue ice lollies which were spearmint and blackcurrant ,(they were yummie),the kids all made spanish juice out of thick black liquarish,we bashed it up with water and kept it inthe coal cellar until the wonderful moment it was ready ,i suppose it would be like brewing your own beer today ,G.C.

I made spanish juice down our cellar, someone told me that if you put a lime-stone in it then it would go fizzy. I did that but left it too long and spiders fell in! didnt dare go down the cellar again. Ten years old at the time!I loved hapenny spanish,s with american soda and the licquorice that looks like sticks! I used to eat cocoa powder and sugar in my dad,s washed out tobbaco tins. He used to smoke a pipe and I used to go and buy his backy for him it was called"four square yellow"I liked nibits they tasted like quavers but were thinner, Seen Sasparilla in Colne, but not sure if the shop is still there, I buy licquorice tablets now and eat them at the same time as sasparilla tablets ( mad woman) :o

Yes GC I remember Fiztpatricks up Yorkshire Street near the culvert. Remember to the film they made, The Man In the White Suit...Alec Guinness. and Frank Picks chemist at the bottom of Yorkshire Street. What about Stockdales for fireworks?
While we are reminiscing ...Remember the trams, and just after, the gas bags on the single decker buses. The double decker buses pulled a small trailer of gas. Remember?
and who could forget The Daggers Arms (Dog And Duck) Carlton Billiard Hall, Lily Whip,
and Oakies Pies. Then going down The Drag! I could go on for ever. Those were the days.

hang on bryaned i am not that old old ,icant remember the tram days ,but i remember stockdales where they had all the latest toys and books ,and pea bobs ,talking of the drag, you reminded me of sunday nights when everone went on the sway, that meant walking from the odean right down to the empire after the pictures and back again two or three times ,the girls would all be linking arms eyeing up the lads , and the lads would be coming in the opposite direction, looking for a nice girl ,nothing kinky or anything or anything just good wholesome fun ,many of us found our future partners that way ,but i met mine down the empress ballroom, remember the hall inn pub too . now iam waffleing on ,sorry G.C.

Did anyone go in Plumbe St Miners in the 60's? My Grandma and Grandad were landlord n landlady - Norman and Marie/Adele Harris. If so, what were they like then? I believe my Grandad was very good at handling himself!!
They were the ones to introduce Benedictine to the club though i doubt the club would admit to it!!
My grandmas Austrian and Benedictine was widely drunk in Austria.
They went on to have pubs in Preston then Kirkham before retiring back in Burnley.

I read that the drinking of Benedictine at the Miner's goes back to the first world war. The returning soldiers got a taste for it in France, where I think it's made.
