Default Towneley School

The proposal to build a new school on Towneley playing fields was rejected tonight by the councils planning committee. However, Lancashire County Council can over rule this decission. Lets hope and pray that they dont.

why not?
sorry, call me bitter, but they closed my sixth form, and let all my year go to preston to listen to the head and governors "plead" with them to keep it open, to have it rejected, and the decision was made already before we even got there.
if we gotta close and have new stuff built, then why the hell do townely have to be any different????????????????????

I go to Towneley, I'm in year 11.

Don't really see a problem with them building on the playing fields.
But then again I don't live there.

Suppose it could affect local residents? if the buildings are near to housing car doors slamming etc!and the fact that it has allways flooded on those fields i would of thought wouldnt be a good place to extend .Im not against the new college,s and better teaching is what should be foremost here!so Im more for it than against it!I do work in a school and these places have to be built!

I went to Towneley 1951-55.I know it wasn't the most brilliant design, but why are they tearing it down? Why not build the new one on Fulledge Rec?

Think its because they are building hi-tech designs and they wouldnt mix with the old, although it seems a shame not to mix a bit of the old with the new !

I went to Towneley 1984-1989.

I think it will be a good idea to build a new school on the playing fields,i just can't understand where the playing fields are going to be moved to.........The prairie,Barden?

The school at the moment is very near to houses at the back of Todmorden Road.
If it was on the playing fields there isn't a house nearby, and if the entrance is going to be facing the golf course then you would have to cross the bridge to get to it.......or come from the top of Brunshaw.

I lived up Brunshaw for 17 years of my life and most of us went to Towneley, and i suppose that still happens,so why would residents care?
Car doors banging?.........humbug........it's the drunken 14 year olds the residents think about

well, im not well up on the towneley site, but i think they are making noises about wildlife, and that it will eat up too much parkland.

teds is the only catholic sixth form in burnley, and has one of the best 6th form records in the country, but the see fit to shut it and shumt us to the other end of town, with no direct bus service, and expect the teaching staff from the main school, st hildas and the new sixth form site to travel between the three centres all the time.

No, all of Townley Park was given to the people of Burnley by the Townley family for outdoor recreation, and I think this is where a lot of the problems with this school stem from, because they tried to get it done without asking our permission first, same as the cricket club they were planning to build on the rec site. That said, It seems pretty obvious that as Burnley's population and the worlds technology grows, were gonna need bigger and better schools to give our kids the best possible start we can. I think a better idea would be a compromise, re-design and rebuild Townley High on it's existing site utilising the best aspects of the current school and replacing the worst, then build an annex on the playing fields, smaller than the planned super school.
