Anne Street, Burnley

Hi all,

I am researching my family history (in this case mainly the Kennifords) - alot of which is in and around Burnley.
One of the streets which keeps turning up is Anne Street, Burnley. On modern maps there is an Anne Street in Burnley but this is an exceptionally short street, whereas the one my ancestors lived and died on seems to have been quite a long street (simply going by the numbers).

Does anybody know where Anne Street was, whether the short street remaining is part of the old Anne Street etc? Also does anyone have an old photos of it, know anything about what type of housing was there or anything about an outbreak of typhoid in the summer of 1870 there?

Really I would be interested in hearing anything

Anne Street runs parallel to Brunshaw Road directly behind the houses facing the Turf Moor football ground. Not too short a street,maybe 200yds long and (at least was) all terraced houses. Maybe a lot of the houses have now been pulled down,it was 30 yrs ago that I lived in Burnley but I remember the district well as I lived not far away.

my granny lived on anne street for many years i will ask round the family to see if anyone has photos, i was only young then but its about 40 years ago when she lived there, and she had been there about 25 years. Her name was Norah Sowerby and she had 15 children, only 4 girls survived childhood (my mum and aunts} of which three are still living, one is gravely ill, the other is not well but my other aunt is well and living in Oz.I have many happy memories of Anne Street (i wonder why it was called that?) outside loo and a big black range grandma made rabbit stew on. Happy days!

Looking at another thread I came across this map which shows Anne Street with about 60 houses in it.

Anne Street was a very nice area and Ragland Road i have heard was one of the places to live in the 1800,s! Due to the fact that the parks were near then and the churches and college made it a respectable area! The fact that St Peters area was the hubb of Burnley at that time!

Would love a copy of this map as it shows an old bolt works on Finsley Gate!that was owned by a direct ancestor of mine! if any one has more knowledge of this I would love to know about?also strange that i had a shop close by!

Thanks for all your replies which I have only just started to read! I visited Anne Street over New Year. There isn't much of it left. But I also found an old map on the Lancs County Council site showing it running parallel to Helena Street. Another giveaway is Anne Close which is clearly over the top of what was once Anne Street. Interesting to hear what a nice street it was. Thank you all.

The map you require is available from www.alangodfreymaps.co.uk Alan Godfrey Maps, Prospect Business Park, Leadgate. Consett, DH8 7PW. The maps are reprints of the 1/2500 (25" to 1 mile) Ordnance Survey maps dated around 1910. (but reduced in size) Cost is £2.20 per map including VAT. You will need sheets 64.02 and 64.03. As always happens Anne Street crosses the edges of both Maps!

Anne street ran parallel with Brunshaw Road near Turf Moor. It was certainly 200 yds long - probably more. On the Turf Moor (North) the houses were numbered from 2 - 118 and on the South side from 1 - 109.
