Default Large cities in England

Well I'm doing this paperwork game and I've got to figure out where I'm going to pitch my tent.

London appears to be very expensive for a 1 bedroom apartment.
But I need a really populated place for my work.

So I'm wondering what the second largest city or where I can get a place near london without selling my soul to the devil.

600 pounds for a 1 bedroom Flat (It is "Flat" right?)
Would certainly be nice.

Oh and keep in mind that in my Canadienne brain I'm used to finding things marked out beaver dams, trees and trail markets. So please be specific because I have no fraking idea where anything is eh.

errrrrmmmmmm... manchester or birmingham are the second cities. manchester is in the north, about 180 miles north of london, and birnimgham is in the midlands, around 80-100 miles north of london.

I've been hearing a fair bit about Birmingham. But I think I would prefer Manchester. (Love Soccer.. errr Football)

I'm going to have to do some census checking and stuff. The biggest problem I have is finding models to photograph. And you kind of need really big cities to find them.

Manchester has model agencies, hot and cold running water, flushing toilets and some people have electricity too! . It has friendlier people than London as well, they are nearly Lancastrians after all...
I'd be interested to hear more about your project :)

We have constant projects and they are subject to change at the whims of my husband. He's an independant film maker.... But mostly for the really controversial or bad "almost B level" movies.

(Kinda like horror movies - Babes, Boobs and Blood but with really low tech special effects.)

But for me I prefer the still camera and deal in artistic nudes. His work pays the bills and my work gives us something to show the neighbours and pretend we are artists.

Needless to say, we seldom have a budget. Always need someone to take their shirt off and jiggle a little and not expect to get paid too much for it. Besides, we tend to stick out like sore thumbs in a small community.

(((( And you can only get hicks to this crap if you get them drunk first... And then the legal contracts are null and void.... City people are easier, weirder and more plentiful.))))

So there is my problem...
London fits the bill perfectly. But it also seems to have a very big bill attached to living there. And anyone who checks what the Canadian dollar is trading for against the pound.... you will understand my problem.

You could try looking at renting prices in the East End of London (Leyton, Leytonstone, Stratford, Walthamstow, Hackney). Travelling the short distance into the city centre by tube or bus.

You might even find the kind of people you are looking for right there. It buzzes!

Kelly I'm glad you want to try and see a bit of England other than London! A lot of people think London is England! I'm not a fan of the place apart from the history!! How about Newcastle? I hear it's supposed to be a good place to live!

That is EXACTLY the kind of information that I need. I know nothing about the districts, their names, type of people they attract, etc.

You have no idea how confusing it is and just how much of a big help you just were to me.

The thing is I have to keep on eye on business and income. Places like Newcastle might be beautiful but with the current exchange on Canadian money working out to...

1 Cdn dollar = 0.47 GBP.

This is going to be a very expensive trip for us. We have to get this right the first time. I don't have the luxuary of trying new places before getting down to business.

I'll visit all of you "blokes" once things are up and running.

I'll even pay for the first round.

Ps. Incidentally, the land between Stratford and Hackney will become the 2012 Olympic village.
