Another thing that may have some relevance is, round about 937(?)a.d., when aethelston became king of Mercia, he annexed the kingdom of Northumbria and summoned hywell king of the welsh, constantine king of the scots, the king of Bamburgh and the king of Wessex to a place called Eamot, where according to the Anglo saxon chronicles (written by the venerable St Bede) with the giving of rings and pledges he formed an alliance. This must be the birth of the united kingdom.
Eamot roughly translates as 'mouth of the water', interestingly Emmot estate near Colne had a Holy well and the Emmot name goes back further than Whitackers almanac can trace, and the Mercian/Northumbrian border ran past Colne near enough through the estate.
This to me proves that King Aethelston thought this area important politically and probably spiritually also, and Pendle/Colne and Burnley are still important marginal seats today.

As a side note don't you think it is sad that schoolkids learn all about Romans, Greeks and Viking history and legend but are taught nothing about our ancient history?.

I'm not quite sure where this spire thing is, anyone got a grid reference or even just a general area?

Ta! I don't see a footpath on the map, are you allowed to go up to the spire?

<Ahem> Not officially Col.Kurtz, but I've snuck up there a couple of times to
a) log the trigpoint ( http://www.trigpointinguk.com/ )
b) take a pic or two of the Spire

good stuff this, its a bit off topic, but as Kiki has mentioned Roundheads, I used to work at the Hare and Hounds up Harle Syke (well Haggate) there was a massive stone slab down the cellar and I was told it was to lay out the bodies of the Roundheads and Cavaliers who were killed in a big battle there, is it true or were they just trying to frighten me when I had to go down the cellar for the veg?:QuestionM

Cool Re: The Battle of Britain - Brunanburgh was it local?

Ahhh! Now we're talking (but only briefly please). There was a skirmish at the top of syke (Norse name place), this occured around the area of the Hare and Hounds, they actually used the Hare and Hounds pub or Inn as it was, as a military hospital, musket balls and small finds have been found at the rear of this place. It was an ambush attack on Cromwells Army as they approached/marched on to Preston (Or so I believe) but I dont think they buried anyone there??? I've always wanted to take a look behind the scenes of this pub its a cracker, I think its just shut down lately, what a shame! Oh by the way the atting force was reputed to have been in position for some time, if so the local community would have had to feed them and care for their needs 'or else', its documented on ancient tax returns farmholds reporting losses on behalf of the crown as it was accountable and a loss.

Anyway, hope you like the original thread......... The Battle of Brunanburgh, its a favourite of mine and I want to keep the candle burning for as long as possible let us never forget our heritage! fag time
