when we were in istanbul a couple of years ago ,we visited the blue mosque.
we removed our shoes and washed our feet ,there were little sinks built into the walls outside''

Nooo, your getting it wrong, the toilet bit is about it facing west so that they poo towards mecca & they don't like that... lol :D (it's a common rumour, been around for years).

does that mean the room is open to all people of all faiths its a bit unclear

well all i gotta say is ...if its a multi-religion prayer room then fair enough ...but if it is for the use of one religion only then i say it stinks (and i dont mean by the smell of their feet ).

at the end of the day we have churces mosques cynagogs etc for people to pray in so why cause unrest by opening one in a town centre for a specific religion (whichever it may be)

of course it will be a multi religion room, noone in thier right mind would spend public money on making one for one religion only.

Mind you, I only know of one religion that would need one. not that I have anything against the need or the use of one. :D

Why on earth have a prayer room even multi denominational (sp?) in the town centre?. As far as i know there is only one religion which says you have to prostrate yourself 5 times a day. I can understand the need for such rooms at hospitals, airports etc but in the town centre nah. It is just another example of a foreign religion getting preferential treatment, am i being racist, no i am not what i say is true. How about another example, Nelson every xmas had a nativity scene in the town centre. Anybody noticed it ain't there no more? wonder why?. It is because the muslims objected to it!

Aanother example of religous preferential treatment, 2 of my kids went to a school in Brierfield(Brierstan:D ),, where every year they have a big Eid celebration party and school concert. Fair enough, but at Christmas there was not even 1 decoration, nor 1 christmas card, no mention of the nativity and no christmas carols in fact no mention of any of it.

So, where is the equality???

Man some of you guys are being racist, saying otherwise doesn’t change anything. :(



I’m a Muslim and also British by birth, born and bred over here as were my parents, fair enough I’m of Pakistani descent but my nationality isn’t Pakistani, I’ve not spent more than a few summer vacations over there and their culture is pretty alien to me (except for the language as I’m bilingual and we have a curry for tea now and then), I were born in this country, ok I’ll admit I hate the crap weather and the BNP and other ignorant racist mother ******** (whether they be brown, white, black or yellow) but still England is the only place I’ve ever thought of as home.



This is my country just as much as it is a white person, true my ancestors may have migrated here much later than yours but yours didn’t exactly sprout out of the British soil, they also migrated here a long time ago from different parts of Europe (Anglo-Saxons, Celts, Vikings, Romans etc. you get the idea) so the British were never racially homologous to begin with, change in the racial makeup of nations and evolution of their culture is inevitable anyway and the latter would happen even if Pakistanis and other South Asians hadn’t migrated here.



I want to be able to practice my faith properly in my country, besides religion is beyond ethnicity, there’s plenty of white skinned British Muslims too as there are browned skinned Pakistani Christians, I know Islam may have started in the Middle East and arrived on the British scene much later but Christianity and Judaism also started in the Middle East, Islam has the same roots as the other two monotheistic religions, all going back to Abraham.



Anyways why is a prayer room anyone’s problem? True we already have Mosques but we have to pray five times a day and it’s not always easy getting to a Mosque or going home to pray, a prayer room is just more convenient, Muslims can pray in any clean place but I’m sure you wont appreciate Muslims praying in the market and with so many bigoted ignorant racist ***** around I don’t think many Muslims would feel comfortable praying in public, we’re not asking for much all we require is a simple prayer room, we Muslims pray to a transcendent God like the Jews and the “Father” in Christian theology so we can’t really personify God in symbols so therefore we don’t require or use any fancy icons in worship (the crescent is a modern invention which Muslims don’t recognise as sacred) also because Islam is not superficial the spiritual feelings are felt on the inside so Muslim worship doesn’t require much as it’s really simple down to earth prayer to God, I don’t think a simple prayer room will be much of a strain on the local community and it’s not like Muslims don’t pay taxes or obey the law (of course there’s exceptions as they are in every community). These sort of prayer rooms are usually multi-faith anyhow and don’t just cater for Muslims, I’ve said my prayers in a few prayer rooms in hospitals and once at the Trafford Centre and all were multi-faith, they had washing facilities for Muslims (we wash before each prayer) and religious scriptures of all the major religions in the cupboard, and crucifixes and statues of Mary and Christ also in the cupboard and some prayer mats for the Muslims (because we have to make sure the floor we’re praying on is clean firstly because cleanliness is a religious requirement and secondly because we have to bow down and stuff to God in prayer and nobody wants to put their face where somebody has just walked with dirty shoes).



I know lots of people hate us people of South Asian descent (especially us Muslim ones) and understandably so, a lot of South Asian descended lads (Muslim and otherwise) my age are ********* and we do have our fair share of Muslim psycho terrorists from abroad who are as much a threat to us as they are to our non-Muslim countrymen, lets face it the latter are usually the result of our own countries foreign policies, reminds me of a saying “don’t go into the woods if you’re scared of the wolves”, of course they’re wrong nevertheless and I as a Muslim condemn them and I’m ashamed they call themselves my coreligionists, and the former the young brown Brit lads who cause trouble for themselves and the communities they live in are just like any other trash belonging to other communities, they’ve nought better to do than kick bus shelters in, mug old grannies and cause fights (if they’re not fighting against whites they’ll fight amongst themselves), kids like this are just yobs, riff raff just like from other communities they’re the result of bad upbringing, it’s their parents fault, their immigrant parents even if they themselves were law abiding good citizens didn’t have the necessary skills to bring up their kids properly because of the language barrier and the culture gap and working long hard hours in factories/restaurants/taxi basis trying to make ends meet which left their kids unattended getting into drugs and violent crime…



…But you can’t judge us by the bad apples, at the end of the day we’re just human as well, just want to live and let live, fair enough we have our differences but that doesn’t mean we can’t get along, most of us just wish we could get on with everyone else, we’re not her blow people up or cause trouble unnecessarily, we’re just apprehensive as anyone else sometimes, what we need in this country is mutual respect and tolerance despite having different views.

Very interesting read Basil....................Some good points in there!!!

Some of our white friends are bigotted on walks of life (me in the past) and that will never change,that is the unfortunate world we live in,but if you can shed some light on your religion and beliefs then maybe we can all understand..........I think it is down to shock culture of having something that people have never seen before.
