'Goths' attacked in burnley

A GROUP of horrified teenagers were chased and attacked with sticks and bottles because of how they were dressed.

The three boys and one girl, all 15, were attired in "gothic" or "mosher" style, with black clothing, jeans and jewellery, when they were set upon by a group of up to 12 youths just before 6pm on Saturday.
Police said the attack, in Burnley, could have been much more serious if a passer-by had not stepped in to save the them.

This is horrendous just after Sophie and Rob were attacked. that was nit too far fro Burnley, just over the tops in Bacup. Is this some horrible thing that just happens in Lancashire, or is this a copycat crime.
The children, and such they are, have t least had the charge increased from assault to murder in poor Sophie's case. This could so easily have been another murder.
I just hope that they make no allowances for age in these cases and lock them up forever.

Attacks like this are sickening, what gives anybody the right to try and dictate how people dress? My niece is a goth and a more gentle polite girl you could not wish to meet, she has had to hide in doorways before now to avoid a confrontation with morons like this.

There's some good comments from the public on that page. A lot would like to see "goths" as some kind of minority group when it comes to crimes against them. I don't agree with this aspect like I don't really agree with attacks being labelled racist. If someone is beaten up for merely being 'what they are' whether they choose to be that or are born that way, should be treated no different to someone else who is beaten up randomly.
I guess what I'm trying to say is "is one beating more serious than another" just because the victim was some kind of minority?
I've been attacked by groups of yobs in the past for the way I dressed, and I still don't really understand it. Some people compare the goth/chav thing to the mods and rockers of the 60's, but I always thought back then the two groups were willing participants in the fighting - the goths don't seem to be up for fighting - especially as they are usually heavily outnumbered.
Maybe the punishment for the perpetrators of these beatings should be to spend some time with their 'enemies' maybe then they might find some common ground and understanding, although I think this course of action is too late for the murderers of that young girl in Bacup.

THE mother of tragic teenager Sophie Lancaster has called for an end to the culture of conflict surrounding youngsters who chose to be different.

Sylvia Lancaster said she had to campaign for peace - particularly an end to attacks on alternative groups such as goths, moshers and emos - "to make sense of a senseless act."

Her daughter was attacked and killed in August - and police believe the assault was because of her alternative style of dress.

The call comes after a row between a shop owner in Blackburn town centre and groups of youngsters he claimed had been intimidating his customers.

And on Saturday night, four 15-year-olds dressed in the "mosher" style - baggy jeans and heavy-metal band T-shirts - were chased and attacked by yobs armed with sticks and bottles in Holcombe Drive, Burnley.

Police said they had been targeted simply because of the way they looked.

Sophie and Rob were just perfect together, gentle, and generous natured, even happy to chat with an duck like me. They had no prejudice didn't prejudge, now one of them is gone, and for what?
I will never grasp this as long as I live. It just blows my mind.

Who knows why they do it, but I agree with Col K all attacks should be treated on the same basis. I'm horrified that anyone feels they are justified in attacking someone just because of the way they dress. I see people dressed how I wouldn't chose to dress but I don't go and attack them. What happened to Sophie Lancaster was terrible.

My daughter often dresses in black and she has black candles, candlesticks and a coffin shaped jewellry box and skulls and dragons and things in her purple room. She is neither a goth nor a mosher. She doesn't like labels. She just likes to be herself and wear what she wants. Why should that bother anyone else?

At Preston Crown Court a youth, who cannot legally be named, admitted murder, and attacking Mr Maltby.
A 15-year-old youth is due to stand trial for the murder - he denies the charge but admits causing grevious bodily harm with intent. Murder charges against three other youths - two aged 17 and one aged 16 - were withdrawn.
