A bed, a bed.....my kingdom for a bed.
It has been a very busy week, and I am really tired. On Monday evening we got a call from Norman.....he wanted us to go over to see him. He has had male plumbing problems for some time now and the Doctor went to see him with a view to inserting a catheter into his bladder - unfortunately the doctor could not do this procedure and had referred him to hospital......and he phoned tha old fella at 6pm to say that an Ambulance was booked to take him to the RBH to have this done.........but this meant that his wife would be on her own for the duration of his visit to hospital.......would we sit with her.
Hubby asked me to go along with him......so we tootled off.
We arrived there about 6.30 and Emily was waiting for her carer to come and put her to bed. she said she was desperate to have a wee......so I said 'Would you like me to help you?'........'Yes' she said.
I got her into her wheelchair.....I'm getting quite good at this....had plenty of practice with ma.
Wheeled her towards the bathroom......'NO, I'll use the commode in the bedroom' was her response.
That done, she said 'Well, I might as well get ready for bed'.....so I was roped in for this little job.
What a palaver, she wears more clothes to go to bed than she does to sit out....there was me about to take her two jumpers off.......No way was she having that. She just let me take off her slacks, but then wanted her PJ's on over all her other clothes.......a woolly hat on her head, a scarf around her shoulders and pinned under her chin......and a cardigan over everything else. She had more skins than an onion.......that said she still felt cold to me.
When the carer came she was surprised to find Emily in bed.....she popped in to see her and to give her the usual tablets that she takes....although i could quite easily have done that too.
By this time it was after 7pm and there was no sign of any ambulance. I wondered if the old fella had got mixed up so I phoned the hospital.
I got through to switchboard, and I knew the girl on there and so i told her the story....she put me through to various departments, none of whom were expecting Norman to be going up there for anything.......so I phoned the ambulance control......Yes, they had been asked to do the transport....but had been given a window of 4 hours to respond.
I asked where Norman was being taken to.......ED, or in laymans terms the Emergency Department.
So I got on the phone again and spoke to my friend on switch.......I told her that Norman was booked in to ED.......so she told me that ED was 'bumping'......parlance for extremely busy.....that meant even if the ambulance came the old guy would be in for a very lengthy wait.
It was looking increasingly like this was going to be a midnight job.
I told hubby that I couldn't stay as I had to be over at daughters to look after the children at 7am the next morning.
Son in law came and picked me up, and hubby stayed to await the ambulance.
I arrived home just after 9pm....hubby rang me at 10 pm to say that the ambulance had just picked Norman up.
It was 3.30 in the morning when they took Norman back to his own home....and they had not been able to do the procedure either so it had all been a bit of a vinegar trip.
Although I went to bed when I got home, I couldn't sleep.....I read a bit, got up and went on the computer for a while....had a cuppa.....went back to bed again, still couldn't sleep....got up at ten to four and put the kettle on and just as it boiled I saw the headlights of our car pulling in to the garage.
Made hubby a brew and he had a few ginger biscuits.....he said he didn't think he would sleep, but on getting into bed he fell into a deep and sonorous sleep.......while I tossed fitfully beside him. I think I eventually dropped off at 5am and woke up at 6.30.......I felt as rough as a robbers dog.......went across to look after the tinlids when all I wanted to do was curl up in my pit.
Once they had gone to school I started on a casserole for our tea....did a couple of jobs around the house and sat down with a cuppa and fell asleep......to be wakened when the cat jumped up on the side table and knocked my brew into my lap.......fortunately it was only luke warm.
I stayed awake for the rest of the day so that I would sleep that night....went to bed at 9pm and couldn't sleep....must have a guilty conscience or something.
Yesterday was busy too, doing stuff for other people.....neither of us seemed to stop for breath....and today has been full on as well.
I am going to have a shower and go to bed early again tonight.......and I'm going to take some passiflora to help me to relax.

Thanks Bernie......sometimes I think I must get a bit overtired....past sleep......and then it is a busy time of year and I never ever think I am going to get everything done.Posted 06-12-07 at 21:18 by Magpi 47
