As this is my first Blog I hope you will bear with me. Life at the moment is pretty rough with all that is going on. My hubby has been battling cancer for quite a while now and it does get you down. He had his first op in 1992 although I wasn't told he had cancer of the bowel (they didn't have to tell me then). He had his second op in 2005 again for bowel cancer. He was offered chemo after the op but the chances of it being benefical were 1in20 so he refused. I know a lot of people will find it hard to understand why he refused treatment but he had been so ill before the op and was just beginning to feel more like his old self that he didn't want a treatment that was going to make him ill again plus the odds were pretty low in his favour.
Twelve months after the op he was booked in for a scan as is the norm. This showed that the cancer had gone to his left lung. He had an op to remove it last December and in January we went to see the oncologist who was very abrupt with him and basically talked him out of having chemo much to my disgust. He was promised three monthly scans which he accepted.
Anyway the scans revealed that the cancer had travelled to his right lung. It is still classed as bowel cancer because rather than lung cancers these are cells that have resulted from his original bowel op. He was then offered six lots of chemo over twelve weeks which he has had.
He had a scan last Monday and if the chemo hasn't helped he will hopefully be offered a stronger dose. We are going for the results tomorrow so will let you know how we get on. Hope this hasn't bored you to much but it does help to get it off my chest!!
| Posted 27-11-07 at 20:48 by bernie Well we got the first session of chemo out of the way and as yet no obvious side effects. Mind you I won't get to excited about that because when he had the first course it took a while for them to kick in and they were horrendous. No point worrying though will just have to cross that bridge when we come to it.
The recliner chair that occupational therapy ordered arrived this morning so at least he is comfy whilst downstairs. We got a back rest for the bed yesterday and he wasn't at all... | Hooked on Burnley Web!

| Posted 26-11-07 at 21:16 by bernie What a difference an extra pair of hands makes. Having my son here has really made been a blessing and not just for the manual help the emotional side is just as important. My own fault really, I should have swallowed my pride and asked before now. In a sense I was thinking of Hubby, it must be so hard for him to lose his independence. But even he has said how big the difference is.
It really is affecting all the family and more than I thought, my grandson who is eight was so upset about grand-dad... | Hooked on Burnley Web!

| Posted 25-11-07 at 19:27 by bernie Well we went on our night out and it was nice talking to different people. Hubby just had a couple of small bottles of Merlot whilst I drank far to much lager. He was really impressed with the cake.
He has lost all the movement in his left side again. This happened about six weeks ago and when we went to the hospital they checked him over and took an x-ray but nothung untoward was found. After he had the chemo he got all the feeling back so we are hoping it happens again this time.

| Posted 24-11-07 at 15:14 by bernie What a palaver trying to get hubby to go to the accyweb monthly meeting. Let me explain why I want him to go, at the last meet in October he happened to mention he will be 65 early in December. So of course the organiser decided to combine tonights meet with a bit of an early birthday bash.
When I was shopping yesterday he e-mailed this lady and asked her if she would take me over in the taxi as he wasn't really up to going. As you can imagine it was panic stations, how to get him there??... | Hooked on Burnley Web!

| Posted 23-11-07 at 19:36 by bernie Started my christmas shopping at last, went to Burnley with my daughter. We went last week and spent nearly all the time looking for some Timberland boots that my grandaughter had asked for, so my shopping went by the board. Anyway off we went this afternoon and I got quite a lot of stuff. I am now trying to motivate myself to start wrapping them up.
The stuff I got today I paid for with my high street vouchers. I know a lot of people think you are better off saving in your bank account but... | Hooked on Burnley Web!
