Default Re: Long Drops- Tin Baths and Cast Iron Ranges.

Working as a plumber in the 40's and early 50's I well remember the "long drops" or 'tipplers". We used to dig up back yards and replace them and the drains with W.C's. In Lancashire's rainy climate there were days I would rather forget. As for the old cast iron fireplaces, they were all broken up with a sledgehammer and new tiled monstrosities of "modern"' fireplaces installed. I understand those old cast iron jobs are worth a lot of money now.
Also remember when about 4 or 5 houses shared an outside toilet. During the winter when the water pipe froze they would argue over who had to pour a bucket of water to flush it. Everybody "forgot" and the poor plumber had some awful places to work in. Luckily the cold kept the smells down, ugh!!!
No wonder I came to Canada!! Happy memorise, I wonder. Cheers Vetbike.
