First, blame the damned ambulance chasing lawyers who will do anything to make some money. The sad part being, that usually,if they win a case for compensation, they take most of the award in fees.

The day seems to have long gone when people are deemed to be responsible for their own actions.
e.g. A woman in my home town here in Canada was out late one night at her companies xmas party. She had drunk a lot more than she should have. Four different (sober)people at the the party offered her a lift home or to get her a taxi. She refused, and had an accident on the way home. She sued the company for $2,000,000 and at first won the case. On appeal from her employers, she ended up with nothing only after a new and sensible judge deemed she was responsible for her own actions.
It cost this stupid person a lot in legal fees. Looks good on her,but the ambulance chasers still ended up on top.
