Drink does get a lot of flak, however smoking gets a lot of flak because anybody standing near a smoker has little choice but to breath in a smokers old smoke - or leave.

So within the atmosphere that it's done in, innocent bystanders suffer more directly from a smoker than they do from a drinker.
If you go out you have a choice to drink, no-one forces it on you without comitting assault. You get little choice but to breath in smoke, else leave the place you are at.

Currently drinking is still a sociably acceptable ting, smoking has become not so.

Drinks can & do also taste & smell a lot better than cigarettes.

Some doctors do also reccomend a small amount of drink is good for you, however I have never heard of any doctor that reccomends you have a few smokes.

Before you mention it, yes drink related violence is a problem.
There are lots in life, smoking & it's passive effects are one that can be solved a lot easier than drink related violence etc.
