If he had passed it to you & prcked you then you could sue him for it.
So it's simple, either you do not have a pin or you get it yourself.
There have been many pin related accidents resulting in near death over the past few years & the BL need to protect themselves from the legal onslaught this generates.
I.E. a Mrs Betsy Coed of wales was stuck with a pin when she bought her poppy in 1986 & still has the scar to prove it. Damages were awarded to the sum equal to that that she paid. She is now 26p better off as she still has her poppy too.
