UK households spending more on booze

Alcoholic drinks-buying by UK households has risen by nearly 10% in a year, according to statistics about food purchases.

The annual Family Food report sets out a mass of figures about the nation's food and drink buying choices and what it means for nutrition.
Whereas purchases of alcohol, soft drinks, milk, processed cheese and yoghurt appear to be on the rise; fruit and vegetables, butter, sugar, white fish, tea and bread are all being bought less.

There has also been a 12% drop in eating out at Indian, Chinese and Thai restaurants. The research shows a 9% increase in the amount of alcohol bought by households between the periods 2002/03 and 2003/04. But the amount of booze bought while eating out has dropped by 5.5% over the same period.

The statistics, based on Defra's Expenditure and Food Survey, show the average quantity of alcoholic drinks consumed per person over 13 years old is 0.97 litres a week.

The survey shows a slight decrease in the consumption of fruit and vegetables with the average person eating 3.7 portions a day, compared with the recommended five portions. In 1974 the average was three portions.

The figures show that in 2003/04 the average person spent £1.80 per week on vegetables, excluding potatoes, and £1.60 on fruit.
The research shows that the percentage of food energy derived from fats and sugars has risen slightly and the consumption of salt is still well beyond that recommended by doctors.
In total, UK residents bring home £22.67 of food and drink per person, per week. This includes £2.65 on alcoholic drinks. Whereas overall household spending has decreased by 2.6% between 1995 and 2004, expenditure on eating out has gone up 50% in the same period. The average person now spends £10.93 a week eating out.

I'll try and work out my spending figure on booze and see what i come up with..........lol
