Don't they have to pray about 5 times a day? If so, it's probably a good thing to have somewhere private to pray (facing Mecca as well I think), in the town centre. I can't imagine someone getting enough peace in the market square to do the same!
One small room is not a lot to ask, I'd much prefer that to seeing minurettes and onion domes on our town's horizon and I wouldn't want to be woken at some ungodly hour by someone wailing into a loudspeaker calling people to prayer. After all, you hardly hear church bells anymore, as they are regarded as noise pollution!
