I've spent the last 15 years working in the merry old land of IT, application development, packaging, network support etc and to be honest you’re right on both points
1 – the monies not bad, but 2 – it is dull as ditchwater :(
To be honest I’ve have got out of it years ago it I could afford to do so. Also if you want the money you’ll have to travel as there’s very little paying a decent wage in East Lancs so unfortunately it’s Manchester/Liverpool or Leeds every morning. Although after travelling to bl00dy St Helens every morning for the last five years (before that I’ve travelled to Manchester and Bolton) I’ve finally found a decent paying job in Burnley :)
If you’re looking for an IT course at college try and find one which is more applied and has a business or management aspect, there load of techies and number crunchers out there. Technologies are changing faster that they can write courses but if you can get some good organisation or project management skill they’ll help you progress for years to come and believe me the last thing you want is to be stuck on a helpdesk for any longer than you have to.
You could also try enrolling with a couple of IT contract agencies, there’s always entry level PC configuration contract jobs about. OK I accept these are normally mind numbing and the pays bad but it might be a foot in the door and some worth while experience  |
