The conclave to elect a successor to Pope John Paul II will start on April 18, when more than 100 cardinals will face the task of replacing one of the giants of the 20th century.
As hundreds of thousands of people continued to stand in line to see the Pope's body, Vatican spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls told reporters that the conclave date was decided by cardinals temporarily running the Roman Catholic Church.
The electors will vote in the Sistine Chapel twice a day until they have selected a new Pontiff to lead the 1.1 billion member Church.
