I have the same problem with busses, although I will use them if there really is no other option.
As for buying your kids presents instead of going away, Memories of childhood holidays last a lifetime and holidays expand young people's horizons. I was recently shocked to learn that some kids have never seen a sheep or a cow in the flesh before. This is wrong...
