Re: Singing Ringing Tree If it's too windy it apparently doesn't sound as good because the sound of the wind drowns out the sound of the singing.
The day we went up to see it was quite misty. We'd already been over to Blackburn to see how their's was getting on and unfortunately it was looking a bit worse for wear and dowdy. The local council had spelt panopticon wrong too which considering it was on a dirty great hoarding only yards away you'd have expected them to notice.
By the time we got to Crown Point the fog was getting quite thick but we were determined to see the SRT. It was a while down the path before it actually came into view out of the mist which was rather good actually - a nice effect. Sadly despite there being a rather chilly wind freezing our noses and toeses the tree was not inclined to sing to us that day.
I can't find where I put the photos I took or I would post them here.
As far as the Accrington/Hyndburn lack of a panopticon goes I personally had two objections. Firstly it was the location on top of the Coppice. Considering we already have two vandalised things up there already I envisaged a panopticon becoming the third eyesore. I couldn't imagine HBC spending money on maintenance of something new when they don't spend any on maintenance of what we've already got. My second objection was to the things we were offered which I felt were totally unsuitable. It seemed like it was a take it or leave it though - we did ask if we could have something else somewhere else but the answer was no, it had to be on top of the Coppice as this was visible from anywhere in town and the artist had been selected so we had to have what he designed because we'd already rejected the Halo.
Incidentally I ever thought to look when we were in Burnley today but can the SRT be seen from the town?
I don't think it has quite the "reach for the sky" appearance of the model but I would like to go up and see it again someday when the wind is right so I can hear it sing.
